Keep in mind Chara's the only one in the entire game world other than the player who has memory that extends past even a True Reset, and even beyond that it's the only being that's aware that something external is in control.

Flowey might be an innocent child who got fucked over by the loss of all their emotions and effective immortality for thousands of runs through the same steps, but Chara started out disturbed. Asriel admits that Chara was probably mentally unwell the second it started climbing Ebott, and from there we see evidence of a child who probably had a severely neglectful or abusive childhood. Combine that with what they've been through since, and, well...

Chara might not have been necessarily evil, either. The suicide plan might have been Chara trying to kill two birds with one stone, even: free her new family, maybe the first people who have ever been nice to her, and get rid of the one other thing that is still causing problems for them, i.e. itself, the child who just could not get along. That failed and kicked off the horrible chain of events that leads up to, and probably includes, the events of the game (likely multiple times over, at that).

Chara's appearance in the game could even be a last, desperate attempt to stop the cycle, having witnessed everything he or she had ever done completely ruining everyone and everything he or she ever cared about many, many, many times over. Even if everyone is dead, at least they're not suffering any more, right?

Even in a Genocide run, you can't really call Chara evil. Or at least the villain. They're not the ones stabbing everyone. That's you. They're not the one hating everyone. That's you. They're just along for the ride, narrating stuff and getting stronger. For you and because of you. Of course, they grow to LOVE it by the end of it thanks to you so they may as well become one.

Of course they're not an innocent cinnabun, but who is in this game? Everyone is varying shades of disturbed. Except Papyrus. Papyrus is pure.

For what it's worth, Undertale taught me not to give up. In the meta sense, Toby Fox just tried publishing his first commercial game and gave it his all. End result is that everyone got to play an emotional game which gave them the DETERMINATION to push through life and its many facets.

As for me, the sight of Toby succeeding makes me think there is still hope for aspiring artists to excel, and thus made me give a review of my skillset and try to improve it.

From fatalism to optimism that I'll be able to do anything if I give my mind to it. And so, that is why I like Undertale so much.

It is definite. The entire true pacifist sequence is specifically because Flowey manipulated Papyrus into getting Undyne to date Alphys and into sending you to Alphys' lab. Sans also mentions a flower manipulating Papyrus in the Grillby's conversation and Papyrus mentions a flower friend when you call him and Undyne in the eastern hotel hallway.

On the genocide route you the player basically stop roleplaying the character of Frisk and start murdering everyone just because you can.  Chara/Cthulu/Leafsnail represents, as they say, the "feeling you get every time a number increases" - the motivation you have on the genocide run.  The game separates this motivation out from the character that you roleplay as in other runs.  The ending has the character Frisk meet with you, the player - the guy who decided to watch the world burn.

It worked for me because I found that to play through the genocide run I had to kill any emotional attachment I had towards the characters and treat it as a purely mechanical challenge.

There is some in-universe link back to the original fallen child who united with Asriel (perhaps he had similar feelings towards humanity when he had the power), but I think that's relatively unimportant compared to what is being represented.

Chara is technically the 'true' name as far as any name can be considered the true name, but the point of them being named after you is that you feel a more personal connection to what's going on. It's not really important, I didn't really feel any greater link to the events of the game due to it, but I guess for some people it's like a slap on the face like "hey, you, you fucked everything up" or at least "hey, look, you and the 'demon who comes when you call their name' that's supposed to be the heinous villain behind everything share more than just your love for destruction, isn't that something?"

The whole thing does kind of fall apart with the separation between player and Character, but at the same time you've been directly manipulating both Chara and Frisk through the whole game, so it's not like it matters that much. You're still, in the end, the Big Bad Evil Guy of the entire game, the villain with the power to despoil everything.

Sans canonically doesn't really remember anything. What Sans does have is a sense that something's off, explained in game as a really strong sense of empathy and ability to read other people. He picks up on lots and lots of little cues, like maybe Frisk flinches a little when Sans mentions Papyrus and Sans figures out 'there must have been something bad that happened between the two of them in some other timelines'. Other people pick up on them too, but they don't have the advantage of knowing what's going on, like Toriel's 'you look like you've seen a ghost' or Asgore shaking his head gravely.

Probably the most important thing you're meant to take away from genocide is that Flowey did the exact same thing as you did.  You're basically running into his genocide run in the main game.

It makes you wonder if he mistakes the Player/Frisk for Chara because he may know what happens if you reach LV 20. He could have been trying to bring his sibling back for so long with LV 20, but always getting killed by Sans or Asgore or somebody else before he can get that last precious EXP and having to reload to the garden. He could have thought your/Frisk's arrival in Genocide meant he succeeded before he died and Chara finally came back instead of just being a voice in his head/red text.
