Hm, that might be the reason... See, this here is a planet, and the docking port is probably trying to face lengthways. Is there a way to make the block face sideways, while still keeping the docking area on top?

Aha. I see your problem now. Extend the box away from the planet more.

What? He just rebalanced the game, I don't see how that's stupid. Now ship power isn't actually decided purely by size.

Bigger ships should be more powerful than other ships and require another big ship or large amount of small ones to defeat.

The update gave a fairer 1v1 chance vs a bigger ship, but makes big ships easier to kill by swarms of small ships than before.

the history of naval combat should be an intriguing read for you if you believe that's not something that should happen

But isn't it SPEHSS combat with shields, advanced cloaking and lasers which makes things a TINY bit different?

I love the shield nerf, yes it makes smaller ships capable of destroying a badly designed or unprotected larger ship.  But a massive ship should be protected by not just it's own turret system, but also other smaller ships. Not just sitting out in the middle of nowhere.  Mind you my own ships lost quite a bit of regen as well.

I already put my thoughts down in this thread on the starmade forums where people were complaining about how terrible it is.  Here's a snippet.

This change makes ships of all sizes important instead of just a bunch of big behemoths being superior to everything.  Capitals kill stations, bombard planets and kill other capitals and cruisers.  Medium ships harass bombers to limit their damage, kill fighters, and provide support fire against other capitals by aiming for turrets.  Bombers disable turrets and kill capitals,  Fighters kill bombers and other fighters but can't efficiently hurt capitals and get shot to hell by cruisers.
Capitals can still destroy almost everything, unless the builder is crazy and dosn't put many turrets on the thing, but an organised group of smaller ships can still take a lone one out.

Massive ships should not be alone.  But when even remotely escorted they can wreck.

EDIT: This is the same concept used in games like Freespace and Freespace 2.  Which are two of THE BEST SPACE COMBAT GAMES EVER CONCEIVED. (emphasis mine)

EDIT2: And this is what I feel these big fleet battles should look like, notice how the fights are still all among the huge ships with the big lazers, but the little fighter the player is controlling and other bombers and fighters all over the battlefield are still contributing, by taking out larger ship's turrets and in the case of bombers directly blasting the big ships.

Look at the other things you have docked there (if any) to docking modules facing the same way, see if they're facing the same way you expect your carrier (I assume) to dock.  If so it's probably the green box lying.

If not, then you could try putting the module on the end of the pillar, facing away from the planet and then it won't matter which way it tries to orient the ship, it won't be into the planet. As long as the ship fits in the box, it should work then.

I'm not sure you understand that link. Nevermind. The issue is not likely the green box since there's 20+ blocks of ship not covered.

But there are no space fleet battles so far*, and the AI is essentially useless.

Well, if somebody really wants to, setting up an epic space war isn't altogether too hard. Just spam a few hundred AI fighters and cruisers between two factions, and have them declare war on each other.

Well, combat seems to be an important part of the game though, and a system where it's basically "the biggest ship win" is just meh.

Understand it? I wrote it. If the ship core was, let's say, at the very back of the ship (or front)... :V

No, I figured that could be the case, so I specifically made the box large enough to allow the ship to fit from the point where it connects (i.e. right under the tower). The issue was the facing. The game doesn't want to allow the ship to dock sideways.

You can change the dock module facing with ctrl menu. The arrow points to where the green box will be.
