Human Exodus
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:31:32 am »

Human civilisation has advanced far by the year of 2356. The entire solar system was colonised, and humanity prospered for a while. The one thing that constantly eluded human scientists for centuries was faster than light travel, and the UN realised that they could not stay in the solar system forever. 10 seperate spacecraft were sent, giant hulks carrying 30.000 people in their large metal interiors, frozen perfectly. It would take anywhere from 50 to 300 years for some spacecraft to reach their destinations. You are the leader of one of these spacecraft, heading to the system of Haven. The various systems were given such names, some in different languages. So, you stepped into the cryotube and the system did it's final checks. What did it record?
Name:
Sex:
Age:
Background:
-Military: You were a gruff UN colonel, famed for his excellency in combat situations. Troops gain an extra level of experience when built, and are 10% cheaper.
-Corporate: A CEO of a major mining company, you lobbied for control of this spacecraft and succeeded. You gain a 20% bonus to all income.
-Engineering: Famed for your incredible architectural achievements, you were a hit amongst many lobbyists and thus put in control. Buildings cost 25% less to build.
-Politics: Wheeling and dealing got you where you wanted to be. All policy changes are 10% better received.
And then the cryopod locked you into sleep, where you would awake some many years later...

Name: Angie McUrist
Sex: ♀
Age: 26, appear nearly half that number.
Background: Engineering.

Fiery redhead of mostly Irish ascendency (with a touch of japanese, which may or may not be responsible for her appearance), she shows a childish appearance, measuring 1.50m. She reinforce that aspect by wearing pigtails and overalls. She is surprisingly strong for her size, and combined with her apparently lunatic behaviour (she can quickly switch from "joyful enthusiast" to "screaming fury", for no apparent reason), this earned her the obedience of her subordinates. Confronted to such a surprising girl, most people choose to shut up and obey. This talent is what allowed her to supervise efficiently the building of several architectural achievements, which in turn earned her a place as the leader of the UNSS Nelson Mandela.

PTW, and i find it odd everyone going for engineer. In games like this, i'd pick the money boost.

Merissa was 20 when she inherited her father's dying company. She turned out to be a prodigy, and had completely turned the company around when she volunteered for the mission. She was bored, and running a company wasn't exactly the most thrilling thing ever. She is five foot three, with a commanding presence that makes people do what she says. Black hair, one blue eye, one green eye.

I vote military. Soldiers are the most vital job when colonizing new star systems.

This'll do. I think the money boost is probably the best. With money, we have more options.

Unless we're expecting immediate alien attack, we'll have time to build up forces first. Think of it like an RTS game - you need to build an economic base before you can wage war. Being able to afford to keep our people feed and sheltered will do a lot to keep down possible insurgencies, so money covers that aspect as well. We won't need a large quantity of soldiers until we are approximately able to make them - otherwise the game wouldn't be fun or Fun.

A few things to consider:
There will be private enterprise. Only so much can be manufactured by the government.
There will be laws that you have to pass to keep the rabble happy.
Martial law can only work for so long...

Going for engineering. With a bit of luck, we can prevent war, rather than cause it.

Lunatic Engineer in Command? What could ever go wrong?

On a serious note, if we build enough stately commerce, we can always out-lever any of the other two options somewhat, while it seems to me we would be more limited with them. Just rule energy matters under "state rule", because of importance and see the money rolling in, then build other state revenues. No?

Also, that background could produce some interesting interactions, if the author is inclined towards it. As such, +1 for char and engineer.

More like "Let's build a city! And to do that, we need swaths of killing machines to protect us from whatever demonic alien creature want to consume our flesh turn our souls into breast milk for their children!"
