These game-making tools are usually very flexible if you actually know programming. However, with Unity being a free alternative, I find it a little hard to justify paying money for a tool like this. This is especially true if you just want to figure out whether you want to invest the significant amount of time needed to develop a game!

Also, Unity has some pretty good tutorials already.

Groupees has a bundle that includes Parkan 2, which was an early 3D space RPG of different sort. Steam and DRM free.

Thanks for the info. After a little more looking around, it seems it's mostly intended as a tool to create levels for games, rather than a game-making tool in its own right. So I'll skip that one.

On the other hand, the new Humble Weekly Bundle is RPG Maker and some games made with it, including To The Moon. So I guess I'll be getting that one, adding another TTM key to my gift list and finally playing with making a game without having to learn to code from scratch.

RPG Maker VX Ace costs $70.

Right now it's heavily discounted at Steam at $17.50. It doesn't include any packs.

Humble Bundle Weekly has it now for the minimum. With a bunch of more content / packs.

For $6 you get an older version, plus the DLC bundle, which I assume includes more tiles or content, and games that I guess were made with it.

For $12 you get some sort of anime rpg character mix and match utility, plus some more game or another, and another DLC I guess with either more games or tiles or whatever.

Even if you want just the minimum, get it NAO. Srlsly, it's worth at least the minimum.

I must have spent thousands of hours making games with this thing:  http://mozomedia.com/ack/aboutack/

Countless more on a couple of wargame creation kits, for C64, Atari ST, and DOS... Custom levels for the Breach series... Winning entry into the Oids galaxy contest...  Dungeon Master editor...

I never got into making games with ZZT, but there were always tons of games to download from the boards that people had made with that.  Must have been hundreds of them, lots of them were very good.

haha... never again.

Is it Steam activation only?

Yeah, only some of the packs/dlcs are directly downloadable. And "To The Moon".

Bought the whole bundle without hesitation. Then it was late, I was completely burnt out, I went to bed. Dreamed a perfect story for a short RPG game, which I remembered in detail upon waking up.

Looks like I've got my first game to make. And if I can get it done by the end of June, I can enter it in the contest... : D

Dammit. I'm in the middle of editing a novel, have a full art set sitting around that I don't practice with anymore, and now this. That's... a lot... for $12.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Ok, let me help with that.

The full bundle contains 10 DLC (out of 39 that are in Steam). It's all at 75% discount right now, but even so just these 10 DLC would cost $45 (or $180 without the discount).
On the other hand, they're really just sprites and sounds stuff, so buying this depends on:
  • Your skill making your own content sets (meaning you don't really need to buy someone else's music/sprites)
  • Your willingness to create games to share that are full of stock content from DLCs (and to put up with idiots in forums accussing you of making "RPG maker clones" :P)
  • How much you value this stuff. Value != Price. If you asked me if I thought a few content packs were worth $180 I'd probably say no.

The non-DLC games are:
(at >= $1) Skyborn, Sweet Lily Dreams.
(at >= $6) To The Moon, Deadly Sin 2
(at >= $12) Legionwood 2

Then there's Character Hub, which is a nice toy, mostly pieces to make your own walk animations and some basic image manipulation tools. Personally I would rather use this to make character than recycle the same DLCs everyone's using, but I don't know how flexible it is yet. Its normal price is $15 but it's on sale at a bit under $10 right now.

I guess what I'm saying is:
1) Buy it for $1 if you don't have RPG Maker VX? Definitely
2) Buy it for the games if you don't have them and want them? Sure why not.
3) Buy it for the DLC or the Character Hub Tool? Shrug.

New Humble Weekly featuring German developers. I can't recommend every game on the list (a person can only play so many games...), but I can recommend a number of them.

Guild 2 Renaissance is the one to have.

Massive multi bundle offer at BundleStars.

Bundle Stars has an Other Worlds bundle that looks worthwhile. Mostly point-and-click adventures. A few duds, but the majority look pretty good.
