Tank gun is not multipurpose gun, it's a tank gun. And 97mm is an overkill, small steps guys, small steps. No army started with heavy tanks

That's why I proposed 40mm LUP we now have, 97mm is a different story altogether, That's a very heavy thing.

Multipurpose is the way to go. 94mm is by no notion too much. Hell, if we built them we could use them on the coast as anti-small ship guns and as AT emplacements during amphibious assaults. Plus ones further back as AA emplacements.

there is no downside.

and as for 88mm or 94mm vs 200mm, the 200mm cannon would fire much slower and need a larger crew.

If we designed our 94mm gun properly, we could make up for lost shell size.

Sure, Jet planes are superior to helos (not in all roles), turboprop biplanes? Not quite.
And helos have more uses... They offer very nice mobility, easier to use on ships and have utility value

Scelly, I like your gun, but forget "against tank part", Gun you are quoting is a heavy howitzer, they almost never  used against tanks.  ( howitzer and gun are quite different, howitzer is for ballistic fire , gun is for direct fire) Besides we have that 200mm gun for direct fire.

Will make my own design based on yours

Yep, German 88mm tank gun was a Flak gun first, then adopted to tanks but still it isn't howitzer and it was modified here and there

97mm is larger than any serial tank had in WW2 in real life, let's not aim too high, we need experience first.

And heavy tanks\guns\whatever have downsides - they are heavy. Bigger doesn't  mean better in all situations.

why do people keep saying 97mm? its a 94mm AT/AA gun. not that much bigger than an 88mm.

What UR means is that hitting a moving target(i.e. a tank) with indirect fire from an artillery battery is actually pretty difficult. You'll get the lucky hit here and there, but there was a reason dedicated anti-tank guns were mainly direct-fire with limited elevation arcs. The 88mm FlaK we are talking about actually only had LIMITED anti-tank ability, as it was designed for mainly anti-air duties. Germany later modified it for anti-tank and tank cannon roles by creating a separate gun(still functionally identical to the 88mm AA gun, just different mountings really)

Not very, it'll force the crew out eventually yes but there much more effective against infantry.

My bad, I'd have gone for 100-112mm myself, as long as your going bigger may as well go big big.

Guys! Go with a 420mm emplaced/battleship cannon! Compromise between the 500 & the 380, and it's a bigger number than IOWA class mains! That means we'd be better!

Down on airships, only useful as makeshift AA, (woo guide cables).
Down on helis, too fragile, too expensive, too advanced, too hard to control, role is superfluous- (ground support).

94 sounds like a good addition, though not exactly a neccessary one yet. Put it down for development later? (not going to face anything that'd need it, perhaps troop landers but that's it)

Better soon then later, but I suggest we get a lot of AIA and heavy infantry weapons out.

If we're gonna face a naval invasion we need the weapon to pin them on the beaches and sink the transports when they are landing the men.

The best way to keep a beachhead from happening? Repel the invasion fleet. Which is why my torpedoes+FACs are a good idea, since the 40mm deck gun is good against shallow draft boats, while the torps will be effective at any escorts the landers have

But require a long time to prepare, we can't use them in this fight so we use what we've got.
Our fleet is out matched though I'm designing 2 new ships at the moment.
So we have to repel them on land, let them spread out and we lose our advantage so our best chance is a focussed HMG and AIA defensive line on high ground overlooking the beaches, trenches full of LMG across exits from the beaches with infantry support.

Bombard them non stop with multiple fields of fire from all sides and multiple heights, they can get onto our beach but they don't get back off.

We have no time for that and coastal batteries are scarier for invaders then torpedo boats.

Forget about designing anything for that war, it is started already, in no way we can stop the landings, should meet them on land with our machine-guns and guns, should be enough, IMO

And one more thing - we are designers, military will decide how to use weapons we give to them
