Oversee logistics and travel routes personally.  Take our stone-faced bodyguard's advice and gather a number of guards, make sure they are capable men, who won't betray us at the first opportunity.

Once all the preparations are done, then we are off.

Let him select those guards. He's the expert on that.
EDIT-the bodyguard, that is. He's the expert

Since we are going in two weeks and staying with the other kingdom for a lot longer we should probably order another magic book that focuses teaching defensive and offensive magic. So once we get back we have something new learn with the book which should have more then enough time to arrive while we are gone.

Merchants are experts on recruiting mercenary guards. Ask our business contacts, particularly those that travel often, which outfits are reliable and tough in their opinion. Then have Barick give them the once-over.

Is it wise to have merchants choose?  I mean, they could just give us men loyal to them, and our guy would be at their mercy on the road, if they decide to pull something.

So are you hiring mercanaries or asking nobles for soldiers they've already promised you?

...Pick mercenaries ourself, with advice from Barick.  But in the end, it must be our guy's choice.

Well, merchants are businessmen interested in getting goods from point A to point B safely, not professional intriguers like courtiers. I figured neutral professional caravan guards with recommendations from others would be better, but either is fine!

How much troops are we talking about? If numbers allow it, take 1/3 of the troops each from 2 nobles you least suspect of scheming with each other (either they don't like each other or don't scheme at all. Preferably a combination of the two.) the last 1/3 form on Barick's advice from mercenaries. Of the 3 groups, keep the mercenaries closer to yourself. If there aren't enough men for such schemes, just hire mercenaries- we can both afford it easily, and Barick will be able to vet them before we depart.

So you want the troops from the people least loyal to us?

No, to each other. They must be somewhat loyal to us if they offered troops ahead of time.
Unless, you mean the mercenaries, in which case I believe you are mistaken- the promise of coin makes men more loyal then their liege's desire to appear favorable in the eyes of some teenaged prince.

(My apologies for taking so long with such a simple post, sometimes life gets in the way.)

You spend much of your time using your business contacts to help you find able mercenaries and are met with measured success. It seems that the current time of relative peace has left little work, but that a few mercenary companies have heard of increased tensions and have come to Analysse because of the potential for war. You meet with a few companies, one catches your eye, the Red Harriers are filled with skilled foreign warriors used to capturing ships and sabotaging enemy supply during siege, these men could prove useful one day, but not on a mission like this. You settle on a group of war-hardened northerners called the Silver Moon, the men are rough and their price is high, but their experience and battle-savvy might prove useful in battle against bandits and savages. Barick agrees that they are the warriors best suited for the task under the circumstances.

You attend a council assembled to oversee travel and plans should anything go wrong, you bring Barick and your new mercanary captain Verack along. Sir Evanson is there, the man that is to be your sisters escort. He is man just exiting his prime, but his easy way with his armor and sword say that he is still an able warrior, you know that his holdings are modest, but that he maintains a complement of foot-soldiers at all times. You notice him eye Barick with a glare. Detailed maps of the local areas you will be passing through are brought out, and the strengths and threat levels of all of the local wildling tribes and bandit forts are discussed. You can't help but wonder why no one has marched an army through the area to deal with them all if they are so much trouble. Barick remains silent for the duration of the meeting, as does Verack, both of the hard men seem very out of place here. You find you have little to contribute yourself, beyond the logistics of food and shelter, the other men seem to know much more about the areas involved than you do, and you can't help but feel woefully unprepared for the meeting.

Time grows short, you have one last chance to prepare for the journey, only a few days remain.

3 Billhook-men
Armed with weapons of decent quality, armor is fur/iron composite.
What are Billhook men (yes, I know that billhooks are like sickles for trees, that doesn't quite explain what these troops do.) And is fur armor as primitive as it sounds (maybe the metalsmithig tech in the setting is low?)

Get some foreign luxury goods that may sell well among land-locked Adalbert nobles. May as well underwrite this expense with trade profits. Give some of these to the prince as a gift, of course.

There are also billhook-polearms designed for war, used against armored opponents.
