Why not talk to the mage? He helped us to fulfill or curiosity in magic. Why not talk to him?
Because we don't trust him as far as we can throw him?
For one. For another talking to a mage is suspicious (given the history of mages in the kingdom). Do you really want to do that now, when we brought the attention of the whole court to us?
There's no bad history of mages in the kingdom.

There is a little bit, the dynasty the current royal family overthrew was a line of wizard-kings who had a tendancy to abuse their power.

It's implied by all the prejudice and the only mention of major mages in history being negative.

To set the matter to rest, there is occassional stigma towards magic use and grudges held by a few families and individuals with long memories, but hatred of mages is far from the norm, that said, it's not socially taboo to have a hatred of mages either.

There's actually only 1 mage we know of. But he was a tyrant, so I suppose that 100% of the historic mages have been portrayed negatively...

What I mean was how he was very secretive about helping us openly. But still did it secretly: suspicious.
At the same time we know that court magicians (plural!) exist, so it's not exactly like they are hated and forever banned in the kingdom.

Which makes it wrong to say none have been. And yeah, ignorance is annoying.

Obviously but you don't have to be banned to be disliked.

You debate finding the wizard, but decide that you arn't sure if you can trust him yet. You decide to have a few of your servants keep eyes and ears open for information, gossip is common among them after all.
Your first order of business is finding mother, and after learning she is not in her chambers or her private study you send a servant to find out where she is. You soon learn that your mother has spent the better part of the morning waiting to see william. Your servant tells you  that for most of the morning william has being gaurded over by the squire Eric, who you now know is the young man who helped restrain william. He was briefly interrogated by a number of important officials, though your servant isn't able to ascertain exactly how many or even all of the names, though there is mention of a court wizard briefly meeting with william alone.
Departing to William's quarters you see Eric leaning next to the closed door, hand on sword and scowl on face, there is something vaguely familiar about him. "What do you want boy? You don't have permission to see the prisoner. King's son or no." He neither uses your title nor bows in respect, in fact he does nothing but reek of contempt.

He thinks we're a usurper. No help from that quarter.

Teach him to respect his prince.
"I will not tolerate your lack of respect, boy."

He is following either the orders of our brother or the orders of his captors. We cannot countermand that.

But it's important to understand if he is doing this against his will wishes. I have a hunch...
