Can we make a euphemism for Forgotten Beasts?
« on: February 18, 2013, 11:36:38 pm »

I have seen all sorts of names for things here
Cotton Candy, Circus Tents, Clowns, you name it!

I haven't seen one for Forgotten Beasts
My proposition is we make one! (And I mean, we don't call Clowns by the name they are normally in the game, so why not Forgotten Beasts?)

My idea: Lost Pets

When the most popular one has been found, it will be put here:

And thus, "The running of the goblins" became an annual tradition and the first dwarven contraceptive.
There are no moghoppers. We have always been allies of Oceania, and at war with Eastasia.

Because all those euphemisms are silly and annoying?  Is that a good enough reason?
(Not spoiling stuff for new players is not a good enough reason for the nicknames.  The forum has spoiler tags for a reason.)

Yeah, because the "clown" stuff isn't silly enough.

I'm sorry, but every time I call in the clowns, I laugh hysterically at the mental image of the deadly gas/liquid/powder being sprayed coming out of a daisy lapel, followed by a bicycle horn honking.

I usually abbreviate Forgotten Beast to FB. Which then makes me think of FaceBook. Could we get an euphemism out of that do you think?

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.

What's wrong with Uninvited Guest?

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

I've personally been trying to push demons as gummy bears and slade as licorice.

I feel that spoiler tags aren't effective, as people always fail to use them properly. I gave this example in another thread, but the title of the spoiler really needs to give some indication about what's being spoiled to prevent someone from clicking (which is very difficult anyway). E.g.,

Anyway, on topic, I think Uninvited Guest works well, but also applies to Titans (and could be misconstrued as any invasion), so something more specific would be ideal.

In keeping with the circus theme, even if they aren't strictly related;

Carnies.

For carnie-stalls~ They're there on your way to the big top, offering things to do and cheap prizes before the main-event.

I think the reason people give nicknames to clowns and not FB's is because of the difficulty there is in finding the circus. 90% of forts are going to make it to the first cavern level, unless it's an above ground fort, so most people will find FB's fairly early in playing DF. It would take quite a while to bring the circus to town if you aren't looking for it.
