There's actually a pair of bagpipes in this room, just across from me. My kilt is hanging up in the wardrobe though.

The kilt + bagpipe combo is common in Ireland as well, yes, but Scottish diaspora is the main engine behind such things.

Of course it is, didn't you say you were in a pipe band? There's also the uilleann pipes and such. It's more common among Irish diaspora though; St. Patrick's Day across the world usually involves a pipe band.

I actually meant Ireland, given that Northern Ireland is a part of Ireland, but there you go. It's relatively common down there though with the whole "uilleann pipes" thing (they have a native style rather than the full, modern Scottish thing everyone's into these days) and even more so among the Irish diaspora - I've never seen a St. Patrick's Day celebration in the USA or Australia or Scotland or wherever that didn't involve a pipe band.

I don't, I always think of the island. "Ireland" as an entity is greater than the two political forces that govern it.

It has been shunned traditionally by them since the introduction by the Romans. There have been increases and decreases in interest, but mainly it has remained very low.

RIPA isn't limited to intelligence agencies...

It's basically an attempt to codify every situation where any public authority might need to intercept communications, track individuals or otherwise carry out some form of surveillance. The .gov page has some of the uses.

I'm not an Irishman so I can't really comment on it, I'm just going by what I've seen. The pipe band thing seems to be all over the world with Irish and Scottish diaspora and it's practically a centrepiece in New York on St. Patrick's Day.
