nerds failing to realize that the communists had zero people to buy bananas from due to us meddling and then using the "y'all so poor you can't buy bananas" argument makes me laugh

also the everlasting shortage of hard currency due to guess what

The problems encountered by the USSR can largely be attributed to it being the USSR, not it being a communist state. (Though it didn't help)

It's technically possible, and in this age and time most certainly possible, to create a succesfull communist system.

Elaborate on the former.

Working socialist system certainly. But we were talking about the USSR not communism anyway.

Isn't that kinda tautological? 'A working socialist system would work'?

upon further investigation it appears a full-scale invasion of ukraine is reported more or less daily so

i'll wait a little before deploying the ron pauls

ranger should have better data
Well there are twitter rumors about tanks in Snizhne (remember that name, it will be the second Slavyansk) and about incoming Russian operation with former Ukrainian tanks and aviation taken from Crimea. But that is twitter rumors without any actual proofs

No. I mean it's possible to create a working socialist system.

The deficit wasn't just about goods, but also food products. Also the USSR put it's nasty mark on more countries than just Russia or the Baltic states. The world is much much better without it and if a single country can not handle itself, then it is that country's problem.

I quite like the fact that I could fly to the US without much problems and without having some secret agency going over my bloody life. Also I don't have to wait months for the horrible inefficient machine to slowly grind its wheels or wait for Moscow.

I like the fact that I can walk into a store and get some bananas, without having to run there and then wait hours in line the day the order comes in or pay some clerk a bribe to get myself some bananas.

I can register a company that does whatever I want in minutes without having to report every single thing to the state and then wait weeks or months for the paperwork.

I like that I can state my opinion without the fear of being dropped out of school, losing my job or being locked up in prison.

I like it that I have information from all around the world, that does not go through heavy state censorship. I like it that I actually have a vote in who rules my town, this country or who represents it in the European Parliament.

This thing can go on and on and on.

I do not like the fact that I have aggressive nationalists of all sorts, xeno-patriots and other folks talking about how shitty is their country while doing nothing to actually improve it covering themselves with "freedom of speech"

I do not like it that any person can just get abroad when he stole enough money

I do not like the fact we have tons of products in all the stores, ~80% of which have horrible quality

I do not like the fact any person can register company doing whatever he wants to do which results into hundreds of pointless companies & more paperwork

I do not like it how we are flooded with information from all around the world rather than learning what happens in our own huge country

I do not like it that every piece of shit can be published without even slightest censorship.

And so on.

Russian medias are so Russian....

Russia 24 news(that is a state owned TV channel)  - Ukrainian army uses Phosphorus bombs, bla-bla-bla http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvCq5lgX2V4

Now look at CNN video from 2004 Iraq http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxfPCPA2d60

I bet that other videos are as real as that one

It all works both ways.

You can only complain about the people saying things you do not like thanks to the freedom of speech.

Getting abroad when someone stole enough money is a constant. You could live wherever you wanted if you had enough status in USSR as well. The problem is corruption, not freedom of movement.

How does having a surplus of products of any quality at all NEGATIVELY affect you? Unless there is some odd law that allows shops to dump the products they didn't manage to sell in random citizens' houses, I cannot see that being a thing.

There is no such thing as a pointless company - the proper word is 'bankrupt' company. And paperwork is not an inherent feature of the system - beaurocracy is the issue here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but local news is a thing. For any given value of 'local'. And often, there would be fuck-all to report, unless you think that learning about Mr Ivanov from Yekaterinosybirsk's potato harvest is particularly interesting.

And, again, you can only write this post because you are lucky not to have some internationalist beaurocrat with a random-ass company buying Chinese crap wholesale sitting in his office and deciding you cannot post that.

E: Nice comparison UR. I've been suspecting the things in R24 video looked more like countermeasure flares, and I checked out how a phosphorus bomb explosion looks like, but all the shots I found were in daylight. And, obviously, stills.

All you say makes sense.
Actually, I do not think that Soviet Union should be reunited or whatever. I just strongly believe that there were a lot of good things there and generally the Soviet period had features that might need re-establishment nowadays and should be considered positively rather than negatively.
Like, Soviet engineering. Soviet heavy industry. Soviet science.

I recently read a book called Le Nord c'est à L'Est (North is East), a travel book about the whole "Great North" or Russia. You get a real feeling of former soviet greatness and enthusiasm now crumbling. All those village accessible only by helicopter, those cities, those research centers that are now dying...

I think "reactionary" might be a better term here.
