A non-discussion, news-only thread has my full support. I got 90% of my news about the Nameless Topic from here, and would love that to continue. The manager of the thread can be impartial enough if they just post the links. And if someone vehemently disagrees on the reliability of the source and wants to warn of that - I'm sure their comment could be added without burning down the forums.
Not so sure this would work, if any link needs commenting, there is a potential for debate, as we have seen plenty of times in the previous threads, and then it gets ugly quickly.

Also I agree that the discussions are the more interesting part, not the news themselves. I frequent plenty of newssites, so I don't need a thread for the news only. Having Ukrainian Ranger comment on stuff from his point of view or Guardian GI explaining how Russia perceives the West or generally hearing how people in different countries view the events is a lot more interesting than just posting links to news articles. Learning something is the most the majority of us can do anyway.

No idea how this could work without having a closed circle (which would obviously limit the discussion a lot) or without descending into chaos again (which is likely to happen if it's open for everyone).
If anyone would find a solution, I'd probably participate, though I have been horribly busy in the last weeks and I don't know how active I could be.

-----------------------------------
And now for something completely different:

Since Bay12ers seem to like online surveys, here are some for the European Election 2014:

votematch.eu - this one unites several voting tools from different EU countries.

euandi.eu - this one is more generalized, while it has options for every country, the questions seem to be the same.

Well, while it does get a bit heated and emotional at points between UR and some Russian (and possibly some Russo-Ukranian people, the ones not spewing conspiracy crap and otherwise being reasonable at least), pretty much the only times that it goes volcanic is when someone the likes of gogis or webber butts in and starts flamebaiting or spewing conspiracy crap and generally being in a logical bubble.

The whole Odessa situation honestly is a can of worms because the fog of war is in effect and theres one simple basic fact, it was chaos. One Moscow times (or otherwise Russian article) called them soccer hooligans, which is the truth here.

Also, at around the time that last thread was locked, I was trying to catch webber in a logic trap by seeing what his interpretation of the events that sparked the Odessa incident.

@xxsockxx I agree with the discussion, which is sometimes the most imformative part.

Sadly logic traps tend to not work on conspiracy theorists. They can always find some explanation, no matter how difficult it would be to execute in reality.

It's a shame that there are no hidden threads - an 'invite-only' function might have benefits not just for situations like these, but for forum games (for coordinating teams) and such as well.

But then we'll get one half of a forum calling the other half "filthy elites" D:

Someone should ask Toady if he'd be okay with it.

he wouldn't

On a per-thread basis, of course. But I'll admit it would have undesirable consequences.

Even just a locked post that updates with news? Did you ask for sure?

moderating pm chains when it comes to it is more effort than a regular thread and it is assumed that it will at some point require it

in retrospect, should have asked for permission to post his reply

Yeah it's probably not worth the trouble.....

I guess just avoid it until things calm down (which doesn't look like is going to happen anytime soon) or there is some major change or event.

Remember how Nigel Farage, leader of UKIP (UK Independence Party) got driven out of Scotland by a baying mob of Scottish far-left activists last year?

Well, today UKIP were going to hold a rally in Edinburgh in some kind of Edwardian hall. Mr. Farage came up here and everything. He was met by 300 anti-UKIP protestors waving all sorts of banners like "United Against UKIP", "No to UKIP's Racist Lies", "Smash the Fash", "Don't be Used by UKIP" and notably rather a few "Independent Socialist Scotland" banners from the Scottish Socialist Party activists who were very well represented.

Lots and lots of pro-independence Yes campaigners were out there. Look for peopke wearing little "Yes" badges. They tend to make up the bulk of the activists these days. After all, the Socialist parties in Scotland are the SSP, SWP, the "Socialist Party (Scotland)", "Solidarity" and the "Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition", all of whom are pro independence. Labour are opposed and so are many Trade Unions at an official level but I don't know how many of their activists made up the protesting ranks.

Interestingly, about a dozen skinheads turned up in polo shirts and tried to get entry to the UKIP rally going on inside the building. They were refused admission at the door and all the protestors started chanting "Nazi Scum Off Our Streets" over and over again and got into shouting matches with them until they left. They were suspected SDL (Scottish Defence League) members. Shows you what kind of support UKIP get up here.

One of the chants the protestors had was apparently "Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here".

Aye, a bonnie secht.

My favourite image is the "How To Know You're A Twat" one.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

It also shows you quite a bit about UKIP opposition. UKIP isn't racist in and of itself, but some of the people who try to stand for it are-once they're revealed, they're shown the door. For example, Lampett, who was suspended.

I don't like the sound of those protesters at all. Harassing people, no matter what you assume them to be, is never good. Getting into shouting matches sounds immature.

It would be better if you could tell me precisely how they were going to be used by UKIP and what their racist lies are. Also, how exactly are refugees not welcome?

It sounds like it was started for a good enough reason, the protest, but it certainly shouldn't accuse people of being Nazi scum.

How could there be lots of pro-independence campaigners when the whole group consisted of 300 protestors?

What about misogyny? Seems pretty suicidal to me politically.
