But that money goes to London and assorted English palaces, not Scotland.

But Commonwealth countries don't pay, right? There is some saving to be done there. :p

One of the SNP's statements at their conference was that we will save £50 million a year not paying for the House of Lords and Westminster MPs.

But that money goes to London and assorted English palaces, not Scotland.

This is very true. I wish people would put it that simply in debates over the Monarchy in this country.

They'll get Miss Piggy, obviously.

Or you could oncce again import a German king... *waggles eyebrows*

Except the German royalty is dead. Well, not DEAD dead, I'm sure their descendants are still around.
Quite, like Philipp Robin Prinz und Landgraf von Hessen, or Väinö IV, descendent of Fredrik III, Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia. Current contender for the Finnish "throne".

Doesn't the monarchy bring in a lot of tourism? I seem to recall hearing they make the a net profit just by existing and showing up places.
To answer Sheb and this, yes they bring in a lot of tourism but they are directly funded by parliament which is in turn funded by the tax payer.
However, the crown lands pay parliament much more than parliament pays the crown, and so if you were to get rid of the crown you would lose all of that income as the Queen could then go about turning all of her lands into even more of her own little Kingdom, to the exclusion of the United Kingdoms.

Unless her lands were seized.

That's not really something you can do. At least not without some very good justification. And 'They stole it from the peasants' won't work, I'm afraid.

What do you mean? Do the Crown lands pays more taxes than other landowner? She'll still be taxed even if the UK becomes a Republic.

The details are sort of complicated, but the crown lands were leased to parliament as part of an old, old, agreement back in the 1700's. Basically Parliament (in the form of it's statutory corporation, the "Crown Estate") pays the crown rent, and in exchange gets to own and operate these lands as they please, pocketing the profits. It gets these profits the same way any land owner would, by way of charging rent and such.
Since the crown lands include not only a variety of parks and gardens throughout the nation, but also a chunk of very prime real estate in London (which have been mostly developed into shopping centres I belive), the profits are pretty substantial, and far outweigh the rent paid. Though frankly since the crown estate makes less than 1% of the British government's revenue, I really don't think it's worth splitting hairs over this stuff.

Hey, Nigel has more important stuff to think about than getting drunk at his own pleasure!

He's a politician, for crying out loud!

Oh.......wait......  :P

And, in the interests of the above comment, I suppose I should state my side. Not that I really need to.

*Beating of knives and forks starts, then rises to a quick, steady beat. Over all this is heard chanting*
Union! Union! Union! Union!
And so on ad infinitum

I just hope the English don't keep calling themselves the United Kingdom if the Scots leave, or at least change from "of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" to "of England [and Wales?] and Northern Ireland"

It'd just be sad, like if they had continued calling themselves the British Empire
