A lot of people, at least where I live, have long guns and/or shotguns. This being a rural area, hunting is a pretty big thing around here. The high school in the next town over actually got the first day of deer season off.  ::)

It is the same around my area. I live in the "gun owning" part of Scotland and lots of my old high school-chums used to go deerstalking and the like, but most people have a shotgun to kill mink or weasels and stoats and foxes. Not really pheasant shooting though, that's for very wealthy Italians. Personally I think it's all terrible barbarism and I avoid the subject whenever I can.

Unfortunately though we often need to cull the deer in this way because we killed all the wolves back in medieval times. I'm sure you're in a similar position in the USA even though you have coyotes and the like. Playing the devil's advocate, hunting also brings a lot of money to this area and it probably does the same for you fellows. Incidentally that's probably why so many of your ancestors (addressing any Scottish-Americans here) left for the colonies; they were cleared off their land partly to make way for deer hunting ground.

I'll never harm a living thing though if I can avoid it. I'm borderline buddhist when it comes to these things. I actually get more upset at animals dying in movies than people.

Now that I'm in college the atmosphere is a lot different. It doesn't come up very often, but even after more than a year I'm still shocked by people's attitudes toward certain things. It's a completely different culture here. Not that I've done much to shake the redneck label.

The whole "redneck" thing never really sat right with me. I don't see how calling very Conservative Southerners "Rednecks" is constructive or helpful in any way.

I kind of like to hunt myself. Not really gonna deny it. >_>

It's mostly the survival in the wilderness than the actual kill, but...

You don't have to be conservative, just Southern. I personally don't see it as much of an insult and call myself and my family rednecks all the time.

It doesn't even really restrict itself to southerners anymore, I'm a redneck from Northern Ohio.

Yeah, t'be honest what tends to be sterotypical redneck behavioral patterns (I speak as someone who partially is one, and grew up amongst them) is fairly easy to divorce from normal conservative stuff. It's more of a very practical thing* with a side of beer, (near) poverty, and individualism. I've met very liberal/progressive rednecks. Sorta' kinda' am one m'self.

*Bring on the duct tape, if you gotta' put in a new building even the sterotypical bookworm shrugs and helps out, random wild animals in your house is something laughed at and poked with a stick and/or killed and ate, etc.

You jest, but the poor demographic that the rednecks occupied back in the day made gave them a higher-than-average tendency for socialism.

I don't think Hillary is going to run because Obama wants a third term. If Obama seeks a third term, what will Americans do? The same as they did when they elected FDR to a third term.

Obama running for a third term in office would not be unprecedented in American history, and I think history is about to repeat itself once again.

For a bunch of America-loving freedom patriot bald eagle-men, they have a piss-poor understanding of the 22nd Amendment and history.  ???
