California Democrat And Gun Control Advocate Charged With Arms Trafficking

This is why I don't support gun control.

You don't support gun control because some people are hypocrites and corrupt? You must not support anything then.

I do support Plenty of things just most of the time I've seen politicians talk about gun control their main thought isn't the safety of the citizens.

Ah, you don't support gun control because all gun control advocates are secretly gun smugglers, with the intent of making it illegal so as to drive up prices and demand?

No, but quite a few use promises of stricter gun control to get into office and just ignoring it for their whole time in office.

Again, how is that different from anything else? You don't think there's people that ride on the promise of lacker gun law into office for their own political gain?

I think his argument is that he doesn't support it because those likely to get into government are likely to write poor legislation on this issue, since they usually don't advocate the issue due to a genuine concern for gun safety, and the legislation will reflect whatever their true purpose is for supporting it.

If I may add, said legislation may be based along very sensationalist, crowd-pleasing lines as opposed to something more effective in practise. This is because the law is designed to appeal to emotional people, especially if the legislation is made on the back of a moral panic following a mass shooting.

It would be politically unwise to try to actually implement more effective legislation, for instance greater handgun control, because the US government is at the mercy of powerful lobbies. Examples of this sort of legal trash include the Obama government's proposals that were rebutted last year.

I think an effective way of reducing violent crime would be the legalisation of most drugs at a federal level. Surely that is more worthy of the time and effort than another "Assault Weapons Ban" which neatly skirts around the handgun problem. Alternatively you can actually attempt to ramp up handgun control but that's about as likely as federally-legalised cannabis.

Compensating for something.

Most people who actually carry in the USA seem to buy guns that fit easily into their pockets/wherever they've stashed them. From what I can tell they're usually generic little things. If they were trying to compensate then wouldn't they buy something a bit bulkier and showier?

A lot of people, at least where I live, have long guns and/or shotguns. This being a rural area, hunting is a pretty big thing around here. The high school in the next town over actually got the first day of deer season off.  ::)
