Most cops in the US are hired, not elected, as are most of the bureaucratic body. It's generally just higher up/public facing positions that are done by vote. S'like, the county superintendent (basically the local head of education administration) is usually elected, but principles and whatnot aren't. Sheriffs are elected, most cops aren't. Etc., so forth, so on, though it varies to degrees by state. It's ostensibly like that so that the will of the people is represented in the running of more local governmental stuff.

Sometimes it does pretty good. Other times... problems.

The UK held elections a few months back for regional crime comissioners/superintendents. Turn out was low (sub 15%) - people just didn't see the need to be involved in a postion that should be earned by merit, rather than popularity.

Yeah, over here (Belgium), we don't think think the people should be represented in stuff like law enforcement. Ideally, cops and school district administrators should just execute whatever law is voted by the Parliament, so there is no room for decision-making there.

Well, people vote for thier representatives in parliament based on thier stances on education, healthcare, crime etc, so the policies enacted shold reflect what people wanted anyway. Adding another layer of beaurocracy and red tape seems pointless.

Ooh. Yeah, that'd make a difference. Though I do have to wonder how much of that pie chart is supplied by national production. Considering how much in the way of electronics, at the least, is produced overseas...

Still. How much can a 16% reduction actually cause in the way of "bad things"?
Price of silver now at a 15 month all time low. Might or might not have been affected by the mine collapse, it's not been doing so well lately. Sure didn't help though.

Envelope with ricin in it mailed to US Senator. Why does mid-April seem to always bring out the worst in people?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Doubt a laced letter would constitute enough ricin exposure to kill.

Wikipedia says that
Quote
A dose as small as a few grains of table salt can kill an adult human. The LD50 of ricin is around 22 micrograms per kilogram (1.78 mg for an average adult, around 1⁄228 of a standard aspirin tablet/0.4 g gross) in humans if exposure is from injection or inhalation.[1] Oral exposure to ricin is far less toxic and a lethal dose can be up to 20–30 milligrams per kilogram.
A laced letter might not kill, but it wouldn't want to be anything I'd want to be around.

It should also be noted there isn't a cure. Damn castor beans.

Anyway, No idea why someone would want to do that. Doesn't everyone know all congressional mail is checked anyway?

A statement of discontent? A threat?  That is if the mailer knows wtf they are doing and how mail security works.
