They're more or less the head lawyer of the government in question. The Attorney Generals of states do not get all that much attention compared to the Attorney General of the United States.

I thought it was the other way around, I hear a lot about state-level AGs, but I didn't even know there was a federal Attorney General. o-o

I guess it would depend on what company you keep. I can't stop hearing about Eric Holder because my mother really, really hates him, due to the controversies listed here.

So what, they're like, prosecutors?

I must say, coming from a country with a French law tradition I keep being awed by the powers of American courts.

The Attorney General of the United States has several duties, the most notable of which is to represent the U.S. Executive Branch and bureaucracy in the Court Systems. Other than that, they aren't that useful.

*scratches head* Why do we care about silver again? Beside it being shiny? Something something blanks, something silver eagles in the article (to the extent I'd call that thing an article), but... who the hell actually cares about that? S'mostly useless

Also it's 16%, but whatev'. And a small chunk of gold.

Ooh. Yeah, that'd make a difference. Though I do have to wonder how much of that pie chart is supplied by national production. Considering how much in the way of electronics, at the least, is produced overseas...

Still. How much can a 16% reduction actually cause in the way of "bad things"?

Actually, some tentative searching is showing as much as 75% import rate :-\

Finally finding actual numbers (to the extent wiki counts, but frankly it's more reliable than the first few pages of google hits.), 35% native extraction back in '07. 16% of 35% is... less worrying. I mean, you're still going to see some overall increase in cost of silver in the states, presumably, but that's not a very big impact, even on the overall supply.

E: If that's actually the world's largest copper mine, though, I might actually be more worried about that. Dunno.

Sooo...it looks like we might actually be going ahead on immigration reform. What's even more incredible to me is that Marco Rubio is a major player in the bill, AND he went on every network this morning and went all in on this, doubling down on getting this passed. Huh, the guy might not be useless after all(and I might need to rethink my vote if he actually pulls this off!)

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Small amounts of silver are also used in medical applications. I'm not talking about that colloidal silver nonsense, I mean that bits of silver can kill bacteria that antibiotics might have a hard time affecting.

So what, they're like, prosecutors?
They basically decide what to prosecute and how to prosecute it, so yes. They are the head prosecutor, and prosecutors in general fall under their purview. In addition, they have several additional responsibilities in relation to enforcing the law.
From wikipedia, they are the "chief legal advisor to the state government and the state's chief law enforcement officer."

Many people believe the prosecution of Aaron Schwartz was almost purely political and driven by the AG, who wanted to use the case as a jumping off point to get a more powerful political position.

Are they elected? I always marvel at how in the US everyone and their grandma is elected. Police chief and prosecutors are civil servants around here, not politicians.

Yes, they are elected. Well, state ones are, anyway. The national AG is not, and is a presidential appointment.
