Hannibal Lecter vs the Thing.

Half way through assimilation the Thing breaks down, starts crying and wondering who the real monster is. Then Hannibal finishes assimilating the Thing.

Batman vs Vimes. (directed by lord Vetinari).
On whose home ground? Gotham would be a no-brainer, but Ankh-Morpork might be sufficiently confusing to Batman for Vimes to come out on top.

More specifically, what would they be competing in? Catching a criminal? I hardly think either would initiate hostilities with the other.

Say batman makes carrots mistake about the thieves guild when he gets ripped to ankhmorpork, but unfortunately magnified by a smart auditor to prevent any evidence to the contrary from showing up or being believed, complete with believable amounts of other points of view. Batman has prep time through exploring the city, and Vetinari talks to Leonardo da Quirm for a while after having him described to him by a dark clerk. The auditor is doing the same to him.

As for the other way round, Vimes in Gotham would get very interesting, very fast. For the sake of the argument, I;'m leaving out Vetinari due to how well he would in this setting, but Vimes has the city watch with him, including the librarian as an honorary member and Rincewind because the lady isn't going to pass this up.

I can imagine him and Jef getting along quite nicely.

Stormtrooper from Star Wars versus Imperial Guardsman. Not a regiment or anything. One on one.

In close combat, I'd give the edge to the Guardsman. Stormtroopers are never really shown engaging in it, while Guard legend is full of massed bayonet charges.

Ranged combat would be a little more even odds. I'd give a slight edge to the Stormtrooper due to full body coverage (except joints) as opposed to Guardsmen who just get a flak jacket and a helmet (design varies by regiment).

They both have terrible armor, but a lasrifle is designed to kill a man in one hit (and is only jokingly referred to as an ineffective toy because most things IG shoot at are not ordinary humans), and IG are generally at least average in terms of accuracy. They're one of the shootiest armies, after all. Imperial Stormtroopers are notoriously inaccurate, and a blaster rifle is chancy at best when it comes to killing power. Sometimes it kills with one shot, sometimes it just wounds, even against unarmored individuals (though there is a noticeable increase in accuracy and deadliness when in the hands of a protagonist). Also, lasrifles fire very quickly. As a final note, the IG would probably be much more inured to combat. Edge to the IG, IMO.

Also, as above, close combat goes to the IG pretty much without question. At range, the Stormtrooper could probably pull it off if he was a decent marksman, but otherwise I'd place my bets on the IG.

Just a note, blaster rifles are also capable of rapid fire. However, they aren't typically used in that fashion because the accuracy of the person firing it (usually Stormtroopers in the movies) degrades even further.

Besides, lore-wise lasguns can also vary in power. I've read novels of people taking a shot - unarmored - and living through it in most cases.

That's true, I believe I might remember such instances now myself. I stand corrected. But a lasgun shot to the chest, stomach, head, or neck will still probably kill you dead.

A blaster shot would probably do the same thing :P

But yeah, overall edge to the IG.
