Why can't I build a farm at that Bonus Food square? Is it the bonus resource thingy?
Also, what would I need to do to cross the water?
And do I need to claim a Bonus Wood or something to get any wood?

Anyways...

I feel like I'm not doing anything.

1) Is it further than 2 connected-to-a-side spaces from your city?  If so, than it is impossible to make any improvements
2) You can either claim the water, or build a town next to the water and construct a dock, than send that ship afloat and claim.
3) You need bonus wood or a forest tile.

You click where the area that a city would normally be labeled is at.

Fair warning: from how the turns are shaping up, it is unlikely (but not impossible mind you) that anyone but me will claim that fire mana first

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

1) Is it further than 2 connected-to-a-side spaces from your city?  If so, than it is impossible to make any improvements
2) You can either claim the water, or build a town next to the water and construct a dock, than send that ship afloat and claim.
3) You need bonus wood or a forest tile.
To further clarify:
1) Actually, a size 2 or 3 city will only let you build improvements in the 8 surrounding tiles. A size 4 or 5 city will also let you build improvements in the 12 tiles surrounding those - the 'fat cross' that Civilization cities work.
2) You can't actually claim tiles unless you have an adjacent land tile (or boat), so you need boats in order to claim tiles you're not connected to by land. You can claim coastal tiles, but they don't help you get across.
3) You can also claim a swamp tile and build woodcutters on it. That requires you to have 1 wood first, though, so you need forest to get started. Also, swamps suck, so it would be a bad idea to start there anyway.

The colony USSR II was doing well. Thrust into a world unknown to them but seemingly under the same laws of physics, the group of Soviets began quickly amassing the resources around them.

The three villagers worked hard to gain land, having already built a potato farm and prepared for an increase in population.
The first villager, a suprisingly small and weak-looking woman, Sanya, was anything but. In charge of the farms, the small town could always find her digging about in the farm, gathering food for everyone, or tinkering around with her vodka still.

"Ah. Nikolai. What brings you to the farm?"
"A question, or, two. Business and pleasure."
"Go ahead."
"We, or, Dimitri and I, were discussing... We need a defense force, and we need a leader of it..."
"I can't run a farm and an army..."
"No, you misunderstand. If an army attacks us... we need everyone to be ready. You are a very tough person, Sanya. We want you to help train our army, even if it's just farmwork."
"I see."

Actually, I visualize that population number multiplied by about 1000 to get an idea of how the zones look.
