The moon hasn't been terraformed. That's another moon you've been thinking about, I believe.

Edit: Yes, the athmosphere is breathable, but that's as far as it goes.

Living underground may be optimal for defense, but humans aren't dwarfs and prefer to see a sunlight from time to time. I am strongly against digging down. Of cause, mines could and should be used but we should live aboveground and build a proper human city. One that will attract immigrants
Oh, and digging down will turn our tower crane into useless piece of equipment

I think that using tower crane and nearby rocks (if such exists) to build a crude wall around our settlement is a good start.

Launching farms is another thing that should be done

Our air gathering ship, should try to find any cloud above, and gather water vaporous

Combine this with a survey of water, and we should be fairly well off.

Living underground is.difficult as shit. We can be dug in, but I don't suggest, "living" underground. Gather water!

Turn Two

Spoiler: Actions (click to show/hide)

At the beginning of the week, The mining vehicles and the APC set out to survey the local area. They find out the rocky plateau stretches out quite far in Northen and Western direction, but is replaced quickly by loose sand near the South and East. As the vehicles have great problems navigating in the sand, the team decides to focus their efforts in the other directions. A short distance, towards the North the ground samples give hints of Chalcocite deposits. This is an important ore of copper. Another, much more interesting discovery is made on their way back to the ship. A reflection in the distance guides the team towards what appears to be the wreck of a spaceship. It's mostly buried, and the names and such have worn away. Likely it was brought up to the surface by a recent dust storm.

The samples they bring back are also of important note for Aaron, who analyses them for their ability to support live, and to check the unicellular beings moving around. At first, the samples appear to be dead, but when brought in contact with water (carefull, not to much or the cells explode) the samples are suddenly teaming with life. Microscopical research reveals that most bacteria are indeed capable of hibernating till wetter times arrive. Especially some of the deeper samples are interesting, because of the occurence of many bacteria that feed on chemical bindings commonly found near vulcanic vents etc.

Extraction of water from both land and air is possible, but will be hard because of the very low humidity. Samples from the compressor ship indicate that humidity high up isn't much better, and the drill results only marginally improve. Cementation is done rather easily, as a joint project with our resident mad scientist. Using a special modified bacteria, we can create some kind of biocement that heals itself when wet and exposed to air. It's not particulary strong, but it should serve. Application is as easy as spraying the bacteria and applying water. (Warning, don't breath in the bacteria. You really don't want too)

A small quarry is set on site to allow for the habitation buildings to be partially buried later on. For now, it's fairly shallow and hard to maintain, as sand keeps flooding in. Nevertheless, the excess stone is sufficient for hightening the natural ridge occuring in the camp, and securing the gaps in it's sides.

Note: This was actually some sort of miniturn. Next turn will be either a month or a week or two in timespan. Please adjust actions accordingly.

With the pit, use the bacteria to cement the sides of it to prevent sand from falling in. So long as we keep digging down, we can place houses down there, and use the crushed rock for more cement to build houses around the pit.

Plus then we'll have gravel to aerate and filter water.

As for the ship, scavenge scavenge, scavenge. We need all the metal we can get and if there are still good supplies, great. If there's remains of the crew, bury them. Start a small cemetary.

I really want to check out the aquatic planet, being an aquaculturist. I want to know what lives there and if we can farm it here if we build large enough ponds. Edible plants would be best to start with, but shellfish and bony fish would be great protein sources.

And for a communal character, how do you guys feel like a civilian leader? Someone who doesn't necessarily tell us what to do, but is a voice into the civvies? Scientists/engineers and Military are both separate groups.

Wow, that was kinda fun. That biocrete would be a pretty decent bioweapon--an aerosol would probably kill pretty fast without being too infectious. We'd best be careful where we leave that stuff...

Search for more stuff to make with my skills. Also check the genetic database to see what species we have genes for.

Great ideas Pufferfish.

We should be careful when it comes to the aquatic planet, it was bombarded, with what we don't know.  There could be all kinds of still deadly biological and chemical warfare agents present.  I'm not saying we shouldn't go, we need the water and aquaculture, but we need to be careful, we don't want to bring back something that could harm us.

  • See what that ship has for salvage, if it has anything that we can use to ensure our safety on a scouting mission to the aquatic planet, then we should scout the planet, otherwise we should wait till we're ready.
  • The scooping drone should scoop fuel from the gas giant.
  • The scooping drone should scoop atmospheric water from the aquatic planet, as it is less likely to be contaminated, and is probably all it can scoop anyways.
  • Stefan should begin work designing and building a system for purifying water recovered from the aquatic planet.
  • Have other engineers begin upgrading our APC and mining vehicles to make them better suited to our environment.
  • Begin mining and processing copper and recycling any otherwise unusable scrap from the salvaged ship.
  • Continue fortifying our position
After that I think we just need to start naming the bodies in this system for easier reference.  I again propose Sable for the desert moon we have settled on.  How do we feel about Lympha for the aquatic planet, Rimboe for its moon, Saeta for the planet we orbit, and Brandstof for the gas giant with harvestable fuel?

How about stay put until we have a nice, established base on one world before colonizing all the others?

We are establishing only the one colony, my proposed actions are focused on gathering resources for our colony from the other bodies in the system.

Good names for the planets, though they likely already have names. Nothing a good downhome new name can't fix though.

I'm proposing a trip to Lympha simply to pick up a large amount of water and edible aquatic plantlife I can grow. The protein sources can come later, I'm sure we have plenty proteins synthesized. A desert needs an oasis, after all.

[rant]I would please ask people to leave the mining and scavenging details to my character, while I do not entirely disapprove of the actions being forced upon the mining/salvage industry, I would think that it would be more "in-character" if the actions we made pertained to the specific industries that the characters work in[/rant]

Anyway, why did we build the quarry near the sand?  We should move operations more to the west to prevent flows of sand from getting into the quarry.  Also, any improvements to the mining vehicles should be done to ones that we manufacture, in order to continue collecting resources.  We could take the current ones off production to improve them when we have replacements built.

Also, we should put the construction of an underground facility on the back-burner in order to collect resources.  Those are more critical than an underground facility to defend against sandstorms that may or may not arrive in winds strong enough to damage buildings.  Besides, whoever was in charge at the time chose a poor spot to build, if there is enough sand flowing in to be a problem, which makes it sound like the quarry penetrated the desert or is too close.

I second the Underground Base idea. Good for storing deadly germs...and AWESOME.

It's a suggestion game so no, we will not limit ourselves to our characters

I rarely do +1, but I have nothing to add to xtank5 post except that we should start mining not only copper, but nice quality stones, too.  Oh, and stone road to the mining site should be nice

We would mine other stones, but the only ones we accurately know the location of is the copper.  Considering the deposit seems to be on stone rather than sand, a stone road would not be necessary.  Once the deposit is mined out, we could convert it to a base.
