At the beginning of the week, The mining vehicles and the APC set out to survey the local area. They find out the rocky plateau stretches out quite far in Northen and Western direction, but is replaced quickly by loose sand near the South and East. As the vehicles have great problems navigating in the sand, the team decides to focus their efforts in the other directions. A short distance, towards the North the ground samples give hints of Chalcocite deposits. This is an important ore of copper. Another, much more interesting discovery is made on their way back to the ship. A reflection in the distance guides the team towards what appears to be the wreck of a spaceship. It's mostly buried, and the names and such have worn away. Likely it was brought up to the surface by a recent dust storm.
The samples they bring back are also of important note for Aaron, who analyses them for their ability to support live, and to check the unicellular beings moving around. At first, the samples appear to be dead, but when brought in contact with water (carefull, not to much or the cells explode) the samples are suddenly teaming with life. Microscopical research reveals that most bacteria are indeed capable of hibernating till wetter times arrive. Especially some of the deeper samples are interesting, because of the occurence of many bacteria that feed on chemical bindings commonly found near vulcanic vents etc.
Extraction of water from both land and air is possible, but will be hard because of the very low humidity. Samples from the compressor ship indicate that humidity high up isn't much better, and the drill results only marginally improve. Cementation is done rather easily, as a joint project with our resident mad scientist. Using a special modified bacteria, we can create some kind of biocement that heals itself when wet and exposed to air. It's not particulary strong, but it should serve. Application is as easy as spraying the bacteria and applying water. (Warning, don't breath in the bacteria. You really don't want too)
A small quarry is set on site to allow for the habitation buildings to be partially buried later on. For now, it's fairly shallow and hard to maintain, as sand keeps flooding in. Nevertheless, the excess stone is sufficient for hightening the natural ridge occuring in the camp, and securing the gaps in it's sides.
