Card Hunter beta finally starting
« on: January 04, 2013, 06:57:57 am »

Since the old thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=89277.0 for this game was from 2011, I didn't feel quite necromantic enough to resurrect that one.

But for anyone interested, Card Hunter is finally entering beta: http://www.cardhunter.com/2013/01/starting-beta/
You can still sign up on the main page: http://www.cardhunter.com/

And for the ones that haven't yet heard of the game, it's a free game combining card collecting & fantasy adventure.

The first rounds of beta invites have been sent already, still anxiously waiting for mine  :)

I'm quite excited for this, hope I get a beta invite in the first couple waves!

Yay, I got a key!

Now accepting bets on the probability that my next post will contain an exclamation of utter disappointment.

Same here. After nearly begging the devs for a key several months ago I found one in my mailbox at the most inappropriate time (exaaaams :().

I played the tutorial and it looks exactly as good as expected, though I already noticed that there is one real money-exclusive class (and a bunch of skins with standard XP boosts, but meh on them). :-/

Edit: apparently, the game decided that throwing you into a game after barely explaining the controls, having you play two battles (one of which is a boss) and then giving a proper tutorial with explanations about enemy stacks, card drawing mechanics and so on is a good idea. o_0

Edit2: and the axe the tutorial urges you to buy is literally weaker than bare knuckles. WTF.

You can play Card Hunter for free. However, if you wish, you can buy some things some stuff with real money. You can subscribe to become a member of the Card Hunter Club. This boosts your loot drops. You can buy treasure chests that contain loot and costumes for your characters. You can also buy some Treasure Hunt adventures which give you an epic quality item if you complete them.

Meh.   :(  Not a game for me.

I liked the idea until I read that part :(

Got a beta invite, finished the campaign, played about 100 ranked matches. In short, I like it!

Haven't spent a penny on the thing, I seem to be genetically immune to micro-transaction stuff - my brain just automatically filters it out. I've played and had a lot of enjoyment out of games with these kinds of systems, without paying anything - spending money is just a way of diluting the challenge, why would I want to do that? I've played some of the most egregiously pay-to-win strategy stuff (Stronghold Kingdoms, I'm looking at you), Card hunter does not in any way fall into that bracket, in my opinion - it's more like a Team Fortress 2-type system - in this particular case you get 2 to 4 random drops after a successful ranked match or PvE scenario, joining the Card Hunter club adds an additional drop. I've picked up some of the strongest items from the NPC shop, just with the gold I've earned over the course of finishing the campaign - I feel there's no need to dump money into the game, as the advantage I could garner at this point from extra items is somewhat incremental. Deck design, decision making and strategy are the winners here, not the cold hand of Mammon.

Some advice from a stingy bastard on what to do with your free pizza slices (you get about 100 from doing the first few scenarios). Don't spend them on chests (argh.. I bought two chests to start with before I knew what was what, I REGRET this decision, can't remember exactly what I got, certainly not worth it). Don't spend them on costume changes (unless that's your bag, no judgement here). Don't even spend them on treasure hunts (I already got one of the sweetest treasure hunt epics as a ranked game reward). The best bang for buck investment for a new player are the multiplayer starter packs - you get a whackload of items - pretty much all common and uncommon, but you need a good item base when you're starting out. I still use a very high proportion of common items in my party, some are very strong choices. So far I've only got the free adventurer's pack party, I'm waiting to see which pack I'll buy next after a few more items - consensus has it that the Fierce Dwarf pack is the strongest for ranked games at the moment, including the excellent rares Rageblood Dagger and Perfect Ferocity. I'll probably go for Holy Healer, mainly for Incense of the Nether Fog and Blessed Ablution.

Important Note: all items you get from multiplayer starter packs are usable in the campaign, and vice versa. The rewards from getting a few ranked wins under my belt helped me power through the campaign, whilst finishing the campaign and unlocking the high level NPC shop (Goblin Bazaar, which becomes available at level 12, I believe) helped me tune up my ranked deck and improve it's performance - in particular, buying a Chillwood Staff for 25 gold turned my dwarf mage into a bit of a monster (encumber mechanics are a little bit overpowered at the moment - sapping the enemy's movement, then dropping them in a lava pit is always good for a laugh).

Just had the best round ever.

Gary: you are facing 7 trog wizards, each with 6 hp.
Me: K. Firestorm, firestorm.
Adventure complete.

Edit: well, that was fun while it lasted, but the game is rather unplayable right now due to an incredible number of bugs, imbalance (with a single encounter (lizard bodyguards) at level 4 with three level 6 characters being waaay harder than anything else up to a level 8 encounter with those same characters and apparently trog-only armor (crude armor) being way better than almost any other armor in the game, especially at that level), lack of anyone in multiplayer and the game putting you in versus AI for an unfathomable reason if it can't find an opponent, general dullness (with doomed enemies constantly trying to run away, thus needlessly prolonging the battle), quite astounding even for a parody RPG breaks from reality (you can utterly devastate this enemy for 20+ damage, but only if you had at least a shuffle card, which you don't, so good luck discarding all of that) and so on.

Bug (or rather 'feature') highlights: if a trog with crude plates is burning and successfully defends against the burning damage (somehow), he'll take a step back. Which happened to be right out of lava. Right before the lava actually triggered.
If you mistakenly pick a lunging thrust with a character who can't move next to an enemy, the only option is to stab a friend. There is no button 'don't attack anybody'.
But, by far, the worst and the most common is that allies are valid targets for attacks and there's no way to cancel a moving card. Why would you do that, devs. -_-

But at least the game wasn't excessively pestering about giving it your money.

Bump. Yeah, so it's in beta, so there are bugs and balance issues and stuff.

This got fixed.

Did anyone other then me not get into the Beta yet?

I am starting to think they are either not accepting anymore people, or something is wrong.

Iv seen gameplay from this and mojangs scrolls, and i must say i tought scrolls was more my style, but later i found its a full priced game (for what it is) with free to play mechanics, what the hell, i have to pay 20$ to get the game and then have the chance of encountering pay to win? No thanks. Id prefer if they released a half-finished game, never to be finished for full price.
