Basically they're collecting donations so that someone can work on the game full time, similar to the way Toady develops DF. It will never cost money to get Cataclysm.

Step out of shelter.  Not even 10 steps out, and I got a rucksack, army pants, helmet, kevlar vest, utility vest, M1A1, Milkor MGL (And plenty of ammo for both of those), all the food and water I'll need for days, and other misc stuff.  This character is going far.
