I think you can take the glass out of a window with a hammer.  Actually removing them completely I think requires a jackhammer though.  Need a jackhammer for floors too unless there is something I don't know.

P.S. If you take something out with a jackhammer make sure you have lots of spare wood and nails handy.  Naturally a house doesn't hold up too well to being abused by a jackhammer, and you'll likely make a bigger hole than you want to.

Odd in the version I saw you didn't need anything to clear a window of shards.

Though I guess if you were taking out a glass plane.

Doublepost, but it's been a couple hours.

I'd also like to know how to attach a crossbow to a rifle.

After spending quite a long time searching for an underslung crossbow I decided to look through the code.

After an hour of figuring out what file contains what code (and being distracted by shiny looking stuff) I think I have discovered that the "itm_gun_crossbow" does not actually spawn anywhere.  Which I guess makes sense, it wouldn't be a military weapon, and would be a bit on the crazy side for a sporting goods store.   Maybe it would work in a gun nut house, but it's not there either.

Perhaps a crafting recipe?  Since I can't compile cataclysm to make sure it works under Visual Studio(probably just wrong compiler and my inexperience), I don't want to throw it into the git.  But with a little bit of studying the crafting format would something like this work?
Code: [Select]
RECIPE(itm_gun_crossbow, CC_MISC, "gun", "archery", 1, 500, true);
  COMP(itm_crossbow, 1, NULL);
  COMP(itm_string_36, 1, NULL);

If I understand that right, it makes an underslung crossbow, that requires 1 skill in firearms (and at least some skill in archery, which probably means it requires 1 as well) makes 1 underslung crossbow, takes 500 turns, can be deconstructed, takes 1 crossbow, and 3ft string to make.
I have found them on NPCs, but then again they are liable to give you dead babies when you ask for equipment.

Hey! I haven't been on Bay12 very long- I actually made this account just now- but I figure I may as well throw my hat in. I love this game, but I've never made it very far. I always follow a similar pattern- find a backpack, grab some food and a weapon or two and ditch town. I always end up getting swarmed by giant insects, super zombies or something similar. Once I was showered with acid rain, ran into a nearby house, and slept until a survivor showed up and robbed me. I think it's an amazing game, but it leaves me with a few questions. As I mentioned, I've never gotten far, but I have to ask- are those factions which are mentioned by pressing "#" actually accessible at this point?

Not really, they were summonable by using a two-way radio last I knew, but that may have changed.

I used the two-way radio once. It was interesting; I fought of giant wasps and pretty much broke both legs. XD The guy on the other side of the radio kept saying he'd be there in 10, 15, 5, 20, etc. minutes, but when I waited he never showed. Anyways, the game is amazing, and I really have fun messing with the construction options.

Oh yeah?
Just wait until you get a few cars and a character up to 7-8 level mechanics, then you'll really have fun.
Also, nice avatar.

The idea of getting a character up to level 7 anything is amusing at this point. I still need a lot of practice- or maybe just a new strategy.
And thank you- doesn't it make you want to whistle that theme? If you've played the game, you know which one I mean.

Huzzah! Managed to clear a hospital of zombies without going below 50% on any of my limbs ^_^ Loaded up on all sorts of painkillers and some fruit and then got out of there. I think the major problem I ended up having was not dropping all of my stuff when I went into a singlewide entrance to bait the zombies since I had 2 torso encumbrance and only 2 melee skill. Ended up fighting like a noob heh. I did asplode all of the NPCs though, since I don't want this run to glitch out on me. Now to go back to my safe-house (starting evac center that's 3 tiles from the nearest house and only maybe 10-15 from the hospital) and stash my loot before going off to loot the houses for drinks!

What's the fastest way to train up Mechanics outside of just reading the books?

Digging's a lot like surgery, see -- you grab the sharp thing and then drive the sharp end of the sharp thing in as hard as you can and then stuff goes flying and then stuff falls out and then there's a big hole and you're done. I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

Heh, the trick is, get a nice amount of non perishable food(MRE's, canned goods, honey), some water and a ton of books. Then, just read for a day or two straight.
And yes, I do indeed know which one you mean. :D

@GalenEvil: I've got no idea, but then, I'm no expert. I've seen car parts lying around- try to grab a few and stick 'em together, maybe?
@SSG: So. Military surplus -> House/Library -> Forest. XD

Since full grown trees can't just be smashed down and could act like proper walls, I was thinking of running into the woods soon and finding an area with lots of full grown trees and building my base there. Just need to find a wood axe now so I can chop down the ones that will inevitably be in my way.
Another question: Since there is acid rain in the game, how would one go about making roofs or coverings for their forest base? I know you can make roofs for cars, but I am not sure if they can be applied to structures.

@GalenEvil: Probably be a good idea to go find cars/motocycles/etc. and bring them back to your base and take them apart there. A car'd probably be worth a level at least.
And yeah, later on you can construct roofs for houses, but you need quite a bit of experience. Like, level 6~7.
@Recherche: You could cut out the middle man and just find an Inexplicable Forest MansionTM

@GalenEvil: A wood ax? I didn't even know those were in the game. XD I have built a small camp of walls in a forest clearing, but it took too many resources and if I remember correctly, I only managed to build most of the walls halfway before they were overrun by enemies. Also, I'm not sure if the acid rain is fully active yet- I spent a rather lot of time in it (not through my own volition) and didn't take any damage. Maybe it irradiates you and hurts you later on (thus the warning message, something akin to "It stings, but doesn't seem to hurt for now) but I didn't see any evidence of that.
@SSG: Ah, I've found a few Inexplicable Forest Houses (Copyright 2013-2017) but haven't found a mansion.

@SomeStupidGuy: awesome to hear :D Sadly the nearest parking lot is in the middle of town. Might look once night falls and hope for something other than a truck. I always seem to find trucks :( Eh, might be easier on me to just run in during the day and see if I can get in and out without making too much noise and just window/door gank any zombies that happen to come chasing me.

@Recherche: Yeah, Wood Axes are in, but they are stupidly hard to find most of the time. It takes a lot of searching for me usually. I have only reliably found them on corpses and then it tends to be in concentrated numbers (2-6 within the corpse group). You should be able to find them rarely/occasionally at Sporting Goods stores and less frequently at Hardware Stores. I haven't looked into the code to see if there is a store-specific spawnrate for them but I am pretty sure I have seen them at both.

I like mansions a lot. They have the swimming pool for leveling up swimming, and the ornamental armor to get ahold of a broadsword usually. Those are fun to swing around.
