Actually, the logistics of the vikings are interesting, because their ships had sails but handled poorly in the wind, with a shallow draft and primitive rudders. They were primarily moved by rowing, and in for example, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the size of a viking army is usually recorded by the number of ships that came, because each warrior was also an oarsman. Shuttling troops is not something they really did, because that meant empty banks of oars on the return.

We should find out what the raider/vikings/sea people are actually called. It might make naming our book a bit easier. (Not to mention talking about them in the thread)

Someone who has random urges to make mog juice isn't exactly going to care about the cost effectiveness of obtaining it.

And, as a fun fact, Vikings were named after the Norse word vikingar, or "raiders".

If you ask them, you'd probably just get some foreign goat-sounding gibberish that we can barely pronounce, so I suppose the current name "Sea Raider" is adequate and rendered in proper Kingdom speech. I'd prefer a more racist name, though, like the Goat-men or the Baabars, but Sea Raiders is adequate enough. Actually, you know what, I'm officially calling them the Baabars from now on.

Btw, I'm willing to capitulate on attacking the new settlement, although that is the opposite direction from where we ought to be heading. I'm not sure the extra four or so days is worth it, unless we find something good. It isn't necessary to defeat an enemy everywhere if you break his main strength. Oh well. As escaped lurker says, try to intercept ships escaping with the duke's navy. We've been building him ships, so hopefully he has them. Attacking during low tide will catch most of their boats beached. I doubt they have piers to moor their boats yet, so they likely just beach their boats at high tide. As kahn says, attacking at night would be awesome, maybe a charge of heavy horse if they don't have a palisade yet, or an escalade of swordsmen to open the gates to heavy horse.

I doubt it. Think about it: After hearing them a few times, speakers of any European tongue could say a rough approximation of any other other European nation. In fact, they could also approximate the names of African and Asian nations, as well as tribes scattered across five or six continents (depending on how you count Eurasia) and innumerable islands.

That's my main point for attacking the new village, otherwise I'd have sided with Gerv on leaving it alone if it didn't look to be heavily militarized

Edit: Speaking of which, Gerv sounds like the man with the plan so +1 from me

They left their fleet in the main settlement, so they'd have a hard time crossing to our side of the river with 12 thousand troops when falling back. All things considered, they'd have been smarter to put a second settlement in the king's lands and not worry yet about the Duke.

Greeks thought that foreigners spoke like goats, so they called them barbarians. As in the baaa baaa noise that goats make. So I'm basically rediscovering an old racial epithet.

Also, go ahead and send our Rangers on a foward scouting mission of the village defenses so we know what to expect. A quick plan based on defenses:

1)Given that they're likely to not have much time to set up walls, they'd at the most, likely have just ditches and earthworks to protect the village. Our rangers will estimate the size of the ditches, and we'll fashion a dozen or so crude plank bridges for us to cross the pits with.

2)If they have an actual palisade, this gets tricky. We want to capture the village as intact as possible for intel purposes, so burning the palisade is right out(plus we can use it ourselves!), so we're gonna have to sneak in and kill any guards that are alert(not easy). Otherwise, it'll be the hard way of simply overwhelming the gate guards with sheer numbers

My thoughts exactly, Urist, although they do wear furs, and they do have beards... if that isn't a goat, I don't know what is.

Tryrar's platforms sound good, but I'd be willing to burn down a gate or two in order to save more lives, to be honest. If we want to keep the settlement, we can just repair them later. It's also possible that their earthworks would be less finished on the beach side, another argument for low tide. I doubt we need all 3000 troops for this, and the siege is ticking away. Hopefully we can start ferrying some other troops across the river while we're on this operation.
