Actually, why don't we wage some biological warfare?  We get some plague victims to march on the settlement, and that will weaken them and thin the ranks, if not convince them to leave entirely.  It's a perfectly valid plan, and in a few months time we march our asses in and preforms a mop up operation.

Medieval biological attacks only work in a siege where sanitation is declining real fast.

We're going to be outnumbered for sure, and well, Vikings aren't the sieging guys.

We can't hope to surround them and force them into a siege. Besides, thanks to their raiding parties, it's very likely that they will be in the position to attack our siegers from the in and the outside.

For now, I think the first priority is to check Curbiston, as a lot of people already said. No killing Arthur or anything like that. If there is indeed an empty seat, don't claim it. Assume the count's duties (like rebuilding the city, that kind of stuff), and work on getting yourself or, more likely, someone loyal to you, on the place. Appearing too power hungry may make us lose the support of the "higher up".
Also, check on the Duke's status. With that viking colonization process, he may be in a world of trouble.

Said viking colonization process is priority two, after recovering from the plague. We cant just let them come here and slaughter people.

Year 7, March

March is spent gathering information. You mobilize your levies, as you worry about sending troops out of your lands in small numbers with the reports of roving bandits. You send patrols in force to Curbiston, Hemswood Abbey, and Torchester. You consider sending men to the national capital of Fallsburg, but the capital lies on the other side of the Sea Raider's new claims, and you doubt you could safely get your men there and back. For now, that will have to wait.

The patrol to Curbiston departs first, and arrives back in a few days, accompanied by a run-down but familiar face. The situation in Curbiston is dire, as expected. The streets are empty of life, save for a few stray dogs picking through the remains of a once-bustling metropolis. There is no sign of the young Count... in fact, there looks to have been a bloody clash in the keep of some sort.

Your men check the stores, and the armory, but they have already been well picked over. The city is marred by the scars of fires from the past few months, and several of the external gates have been broken down as well. A few scavengers are spotted by your men, but they disappear into the ruins before any questions can be asked of them. They check the status of the river chain, as well, and find that it has been fouled, its mechanisms busted beyond immediate repair.

On their way out of the city, however, they come upon a disheveled husk of a man rooting about in a ditch. He sees your men, and immediately yells "Stone! Take me to Sir Samuel Stone! I am... a friend of his."

The Ranger Captain Oswald, leading this patrol, recognizes the man despite his gaunt figure as The Rat, and returns with him as quickly as possible. When you meet with him after he is bathed and fed, the man tells a tale of plague run rampant, which claimed the life of the young Count. Order soon collapsed, and riots soon racked the city. Your man, Gunther Agnacious, was killed in said riots. The Rat barely escaped with his life. You offer him once again the opportunity to take residence in Feroshire, which he now graciously accepts.

You take this in stride, aware of the power vacuum in the County now. Word returns later from Hemswood Abbey, which survived the plague nearly unaffected. Torchester, it seems, still stands, having been mildly damaged by the plague. It is now the subject of rather constant harassment by Sea Raiders, though. The Duke asks you to write to him of the state of the County as soon as you are able. He passes on word that he believes the King still rules from Fallsburg, although he has heard reports that the city may be under siege by Sea Raiders. As you previously learned, Denton and Percival's lands are recovering slowly as well.

The rest of the month is spent sending troops out to forage for loose supplies, livestock, equipment, and food in the plague-ravaged countryside. You are quite lucky in this, as your men stumble upon several herds of goats, sheep, and cattle, which are added to your flocks, as well as a few large groups of refugees who are incorporated into your city after a period of quarantine.

March is coming to a close, and you now know your situation much more clearly. What shall you do in April?

I think we should ignore Curbiston. Send our scouts to try and find out what we can about the status of the Sea Raider invasion.

Curbiston is still important as a symbol. Let's also say a sea raider patrol went upstream, as they did before, and they pass by a big empty city with an extensive dock and stout pre-built defenses. What might occur to them?

Yup, Curbiston is lost. If anything, I think we should burn it.


Anyway, internal stuff:

> Turn the muddy holes into proper water reservoirs. We might need them later.
> Construct a siege engineer workshop. Siege engines are fun and might be needed.
> See if we can salvage Curbistons River chain. Install it in our village.

Curbiston can't be ignored. Burning would make it less habitable for peaceful civilians; but a big stone keep, even if burn-out, and a big stone wall are ready made defenses for any invader raid camp. Slighting the walls will take considerable effort.

1. The countryside probably still has rural folk that need a market, too, in the same way that Feroshire has 3x its city population in the countryside. The riots didn't kill them, and rural areas aren't hit by communicable diseases as hard. Those people are worth more than their weight in gold after a depopulation event, and they need a stable environment.

2. It's also a better place to stop raider incursions. It's downstream. It's more naturally defensible inside a loop of the river, where boats are within bowshot for a long time. It protects not only itself and Feroshire, but all the land between the two places.

3. Then there is the continuing benefit that Curbiston is more central to the region, an obvious rallying point.

I'm thinking we may want to resettle the place.

My suggestion is a bit radical. I say we take 50 townspeople and our retinue to resettle the place. As our capital city. We give Feroshire to an underling, perhaps Finn, with the view of making ourselves Count and Finn our knight. The duke has already de facto given us a county-level task to oversee, that of surveying the capabilities of the County after the plague, so we are the Count and should act like it.
