No, we need to go straight to the Duke. Anything else will seem like us going rogue and trying to sieze power. The way it all stands now, the Duke will probably give us Curbiston anyway. Talk to him first.

We should at the very least re occupy Curbiston with a military force, since it's an important fortress and valuable strategic point, as both a resupply point and just because of how bloody well defended it will be.  We need to also increase our levies to the absolute maximum we can at the time.
Concurrently we should do a full sweep of the county to check on the standings of all other settlements, and take stock of available soldiers, food, and any issues they may have with food.  Then we tax food from places with a surplus of food and send it to the places that need it.  We then take the soldiers and use them to wipe out the bandit hordes.  After that we move onto dealing with the sea raiders.
Sounds like a plan.

Back home we should have the forges start to churn out materiel for war, armour and weapons, specifically.  We should also get any other settlements with that capacity to do the same, we're going to need an army, and we may not be able to arm them otherwise.
We have bigger priorities at the moment. If this doesn't interfere with getting the farms up and such, +1.

We should go on a trip first to Curbiston to survey the damage ourselves, then move on down to the duchy seat to confer with the duke about our next steps, as well as whether some biological warfare is feasible.  While there we must make sure to tell him we've re-occupied Curbiston with our forces, and plan to re-populate it ASAP.  Further, we also say we're currently trying to get the basic facilities of the county up and running again, and will be doing a full sweep of the county to see what needs to be done to restore order.
Why would we use biological warfare?
Aside from that, pretty good.

And say what? "Yup, Curbiston is pretty much gone. Except for the buildings, most of those are still up."

If we have our smiths and miners working on it I don't see what interference that would cause.
Also I've forgotten, can we make steel or do we not have that capability?

The Duke has underlings so that he doesn't have to be pestered about every obvious step like this. As GWG says, that place is no gift right now. It's a burden. We are taking control of it as a duty to restore the County.

Good suggestions. We need to find out where those bandits are gathering. Also, if a settlement looks too devastated to comtinue supporting itself, have the people pull back to Curbiston, where we'll resettle them.

Let's not forget our own planting. We have many townspeople now and some probably haven't found their own niche. Let's settle them on the northern parcel farms.

+1, I hadn't thought of those.

It's things like this that make suggestion games so much more fun when lots of people participate. That, and the debates.

Grab Cubishton for the moment, I guess. However, never fly our flag in the centre pole - leave it bare for now to signify submission to a higher unknown authority (or, say the flag of the duke?)

this sounds good, We're acting right now for the good of the county. While I'm sure everybody is hoping we'll end up as count by doing this I do believe we shouldn't go around crowning ourselves. I'm sure we'll be rewarded for our actions once order has been restored, and hell if someone else is placed into the position of count by the king We could always go revolt ;) j/k

We should try to learn the fate or Sir Uriel Lope, He won't be happy about the end of the Folsden line. but it would be nice to have him on our side for the good of the county.

We do seem to be at war, after all. And, if I remember correctly, Curbiston is downriver from us, so if we can get the chain working, we can use it as a first line of defense against sea raiders coming up the river towards Feroshire. So we should probably see if we have any sort of engineer(s) who might be able to figure out how to fix the mechanisms.

Do we have any idea what's going on in Carshire? It was an important town as well, and it might be in even more imminent danger from the vikings.

I seem to have left that out of the update. Carshire is better off than Curbiston, in that it didn't completely collapse, but the plague struck hard there, killing many. It is recovering, but slowly, with the roving bandits proving to be an impediment to that process.

The town should have a flag, since that is an important long-range visual communication in this era, and will do much to calm those who see it... therefore, okay, let's fly the Duke's colors at least.

We could just fly the kingdom's flag, if our kingdom has one.

When we reoccupy Curbistan, we should send at least a couple metalsmiths to restart the forges, and one or two men who have knowledge of mechanics, as well as some iron ingots. As a first priority, we need to restore the river chain

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

One other thing. Restart ship production and start building war cogs/copying the longboats we captured. We'll eventually need to get a small navy going to attack the Raiders(unless, of course, there isn't a waterborne route to them, which in that case ignore this suggestion)
