Hrmm, now that i think about it the community of serf miners have next to no protection, and make a tempting target. I think we should give a few of the more leaderlike among them crude weapons and shields in case of trouble. Giving the people the ability to defend themselves from brigands might cement their loyalty, it shows that we trust them and care for their wellbeing.
Alternatively, or in addition, we could start a feroshire watch. They could be part-time gaurdsmen intended simply to keep order, and also to protect the people when there is need of our troops elsewhere. This would allow our troops to focus on training rather than acting as a police force, and let us take the full force of our troops to battle if we need to.
We wouldn't even need a lot, with out current population a handful would be sufficient.

Well, given THAT info, when she arrives tell her we seek her hand in marriage(not immediately, though! That might seem rude!). We need an heir for us so that the count won't try again.
It might seem foolish given the circumstances, but i thought we might wait at least one more meeting before this. We havn't had much quality time with her and i don't think we should rush. This will have been the first time we've spent time with her simply for the sake of spending time with her.
Why not?  We should marry her sooner rather then later, partly because it will heighten our prestige, partly because it will provide us with protection, and partly because we obviously seem to like each other.  We aren't rushing anything.
This is basically our first, maybe second date. Just for perspective.
This is the medieval ages, we're lucky we even got one date.

Fair point, however we have more than our people to impress, and may be called upon to sway our fellow noblemen. Also it is expected that, as lord of the land, we give speeches at tournaments and fairs. I would rather not be embarrassed at times when the speech could actually embarrass us such as the October fair and rather we practice in a more comfortable setting with few repurcussions.

Yeah, well, rhetoric is one of those things that people go to university and study for a long time. We don't have that background. We should focus on connecting with other people on a more unassuming level, and they'll forgive us a poor speech or two, if they know that we're not making pretensions to actual skill. And we should focus on getting friends among the nobles who can argue for us in courts, also. It just doesn't seem to be our strength, to be honest.

That way if we ever do have a mobile cavalry they can function for weeding out stragglers past our lines, possibly rapiers if we decide to keep them on foot and that way they can pierce through most things and easily take the fight out of someone as well as disable them (Rapiers are killer for parrys,). If we want to stick to the dagger route may I suggest the sword breaker.

Mobile cavalry is a really good idea, I think. Much better than staying on foot. Good archery, which appears to be our own natural strength and a major focus of our force composition, is a really hard skill to learn. We should preserve our rangers by training them as dragoons who ride to their position, deploy and skirmish, then mount up and ride away again if threatened by a charge.

This still leaves them open to return archer fire, though. Just brainstorming, but could we get them pavise shields somehow? They need two hands for a longbow, so maybe each has a small boy doubling up on their mounts? Lol.

Courtship sometimes took years, though not usually. It's the arranged marriages that took three seconds, and those ones *were* often planned years in advance.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Good point, plus it makes stealth difficult. If we want mobile cavalry we can train some when we are much wealthier, not living off of tax day to tax day. For now let us train our rangers in stealth, trapping and wildcraft.

That was before we found a large gold mine beneath us, though. I'm pretty sure everyone could be mounted once we have full output from the mines. If we're not going for heavy infantry that can survive melee, then we'd better be able to avoid mounted charges, and light skirmishers can't do that on foot. Our population is small and valuable, not a horde.

Also, Gotdamn was talking about the future, and I was echoing that. Not saying we outfit them with horses now, but simply that it's the end goal when they're trained up and too valuable to lose to a massed charge of knights. For now, yeah, woodcraft, etc.

Even if we had that, it would still be expensive to fully equip them, and then we need to get people to properly train them in riding, archery, and shooting while riding.  The latter is likely to be a somewhat rare skill given the setting, so these people who can teach will likely to able to charge a hefty price.  Not to mention that riding without use of your hands is rather difficult, apparently.

That depends on the terrain, in and around woods for instance, cavalry would get torn apart by light foot troops, nevermind ones trained specifically to fight that way. Our rangers could use stealth to pick away at enemy armies, laying traps and dissapearing into the wilderness only to emerge again to take a few soldiers with them. Troops that don't fight in the open are invaluable for the difficulty in fighting them, as well as the psychological effect they have on enemies.

They don't shoot while riding. They're dragoon-like footmen. They ride to a position, jump off their saddles, twang their bows for as long as their position isn't threatened by an attack, then jump back on their horses and ride away when eventually threatened. No combat riding skills with horses specially trained, just an average small swift horse and average riding skills--which most of them probably haven't got yet, being commoners.

Alan wanted a command at some point, perhaps we could put him in charge of training the watch and organizing their schedule, he loves the people so we know we could trust him with ensuring the guard treat folk fairly. It would be a temporary position, but perhaps one he would appreciate.

Edit: Alan is just now springing into manhood isn't he? Unless he was already so when he became our squire, i'm not sure his age has ever been clarified.

I believe he was a little younger than us. About 19 years. Squires often stayed squires into middle age, due to simply not finding a fief. We'll do better by Alan, though.

So, before the update... were we proposing or not? Kinda important.

We are making clear that we intend to marry her, so yes we ask her. That does not mean we marry right away, that mean we'll be engaged and that we are bound to marry at some point in the near future.
Also call back the rangers, I think the rat made clear they are useless in this kind of job.
