Oh sure, they're strong from our standpoint. But in a universe where your weapon has an AP of "-" you're basically out of luck.

Yeah, but the 8 mooks with lasguns in a Guard squad are just there to soak damage for the heavy and special weapons guys. Or so it was back in my day. Ah, found memories of when everything went plastic and relatively cheap and all of a sudden a 2000 point army with 100+ cannon fodder was a thing that I could do. With enough money left over for a bucket for all those dice. A big bucket.

Also, as to the "original just had genestealers" thing, I remember there being a chaos dreadnaught, but I played it with my crazy uncle and his family when I was like 7.
Anyway, this is a good thing.

I'm pretty sure there were some expansions with chaos stuff.

And there's no room for heavy and special weapons guys in a SPACE HULK.  A terminator is both of those things and he's still almost definitely fucked.

I don't think Terminators use those. Regular marines, on the other hand...

Not since the last Guard book, and the awesomeness that is "First Rank Fire! Second Rank Fire!". Just buy max size squads with no extras to maximize the number of lasguns in your army. If there's a theoretical possibility for something to die from lasgun fire it will die, because when you're throwing a whole 10-liter bucket of dice at once you're bound to get some good rolls.

Lasguns are actually not as weak as everyone portrays them as. In the lore a single lasgun can breech Space Marine armor, albeit only slightly. It just so happens that everyone the Guard comes up against is either extremely tough, extremely numerous, or both.

Only against damaged Ceramite or when it happens to hit in a joint in the shoulder/knee/elbow.

Otherwise shooting a SM or CSM with a Lasgun is like shooting them with a high velocity Roman Candle.

(Of course, Lore in WH40K is BS compard to the table top rules. Otherwise Space Marines and CSM would be practically unstoppable.)

Two computer games, the first had Deathwing and was a mix of first person and overhead command.  Second had Blood Angels.  Dont know if you can get them as abandonware, GW is usually pretty watchful over their licensed properties.

There was also an indy game that was pretty much a direct remake of the board game, but they had to rename it to Alien Assault for legal reasons:  http://www.teardown.se/
Alien Assault is a quite great space hulk - like game.

I have played it a lot , too bad it's a bit too dependant on luck, as there's a chance of jamming for each shot and this is the best way to lose your experienced hardened veteran that miraculously survived a few missions and is full of medals and promotions.

And losing a marine like this usually lead into a cascade of disaster as it opens a flank in your defense and get the other marines usually killed.
that random Jamming is usually the 1st cause of death and of mission lost (as your marines are usually bad at hand to hand combat and will be killed more than they kill when close combat start)

You can disable the jamming chances with a cheat code though.

There were a lot of  modifications available for Alien Assault , but unfortunately with all those webhosts like megaupload that got put down, most of them are lost.

But even despite the jamming, Alien Assault is a great game. You can only like when your characters get promoted and earn medals (and are killed in the next mission due to their gun jamming at the worst time :D )

Alien Assault 2 is in development, full of interesting new ideas, i hope they will be able to make a release one day

Guns only jammed on overwatch... although if you didn't use over watch you were fucked anyway.

Anyway, this is a good thing.
That was Space Crusade, which featured normal space marines.
I think it was an expansion pack which added CSM and the dreadnaught, and also proto-necrons before they became an offical thing.

Chaos marines and dreadnaughts were both in the base game but there was an expansion that expanded the number and types of dreadnaughts. The androids were actually part of some of the older Chaos armylists for 40k, though they disappeared some time before the Necrons were first introduced.

I'm pretty sure either the Deathwing or Genestealer expansion added plasmaguns for the terminators.

There was later a specialist games or a whitedwarf article that had conversion rules for any wargame model... Probably 2nd ed.

This could actually be a very nice strategy game. The original board game was pretty simple, it had to be so it could run fairly quickly, but it was one of the better GW offerings in many ways.

I also played a fair bit of the original dos version, even ripped all the .pcm sound files for a T.pascal project back in the day when I did that stuff, and it was pretty fun. The whole "freeze time" concept actually worked very well in the turn-based->computer game transistion, although it was sometimes a case of learning the maps, not of great skill.

I hope they do add a good bit of moddability to this, or take the time to do quite a bit of other stuff. Even if it's just a graphics update of the board-game or original computer version, with more styles of weaponry and missions, it should be fine.

Controlling squads or team members in multiplayer would be great fun, but so would being the patriarch (kill those weak genotype humans). I could see it becoming a classic if you could have two people controlling a 5 man team of terminators each and two people controlling genestealers from different groups of spawn points. Especially if they expand it to allow different attackers and defenders from the WH40k universe. Vs AI is fun, but co-op or competitive would be a blast.

Anyway, looking forward to this a heap now I've heard about it.

For the record, plasma guns provide plenty of dakka. They just have this unfortunate tendency to.....explode.
