Yeah, a lot of the art is greaaat, and EO4 is no exception! I'm kind've wondering how well the 3D models will hold up, because the spriting was fantastic in EO 1-3.

I'm not a big fan of the 3D models of the monsters but it not a big deal.
Though there seems to be no F.O.E in this since they have their shape on the map it look like.

That just means you get to see what exactly is going to wipe the floor with your party for stumbling into it too early before the battle even starts, instead of the Blob of Doom. ;)

Having flashbacks of those weird pumpkin FOE in the second stratum of EO2 that seemed to resist all of the attacks I tried to hit them with. There's a special kind of panic for when not only are you getting your clock cleaned by a single enemy, but you're also not doing any real damage to it. :P

So, I'm thinking Alraune in EO1 may have been designed as a post-game boss, for all that her quest unlocks with the fifth stratum.  I'm not sure why, though.  Something about the way she was hammering my level 50 party for 100 damage per person to every person with her Flame and Volt attacks every turn even through a maxed-out Immunize makes me think that facing her without either a horribly imbalanced skill or another 20 levels of advancement might not be the wisest course of action.  It was almost Lagaard-levels of boss difficulty, which was rather refreshing.  And yes, I'm well-aware of the humour inherent in talking about difficulty while using Immunize/Relaxing.  I don't actually spam them for every battle; just the ones that would otherwise wipe me in two turns. ^_^

Speaking of that, entering the fifth stratum in EO1.  I had already been spoiled on it, but even so, actually seeing it for myself made my heart skip a beat for a second.  There's nothing quite like it, even in the other games.

According to the wiki the alarune is statted as a post game boss in EO1, yep! You're also pulling up on (or maybe already past, I'm not actually very well versed in etrian odyssey post game) the elemental dragons, and they're always a blast. Although Immunize probably nulls them pretty significantly now that I think about it.

I really feel like the later EO games lose out by not having stratum that blindside you like EO1's 5th stratum. The "roaming the wilderness" theme is nice, and pretty non standard for the genre, but a bit of surprise is nice now and then.

Etrian Odyssey 2 used the word "hie", correctly even. I didn't know that word existed until I played it.

Fifth stratum in EO1 is marvelous. I got spoiled on the concept, and the intro of its theme, but holy shit. It became so much more awesome, in the "I'm in awe" meaning, than I had imagined. Dito final boss.

I could gush days about what kind of masterpiece the fifth stratum theme is. Probably because of its simplicity. It evokes grand emotions.

This has started my tradition of trying to not spoil myself on fifth stratum themes. I really look forward to getting to EO2's fifth stratum so that I can find out how the song continues. It's like half the reason I'm playing the game.
