The bulk of the main team should be sufficient, but a lot of the special fights will probably require a swap or two... The original EO megabosses were ridiculous and they've toned it down, but I still find it useful even with the current ones.

Pretty much anything short of the megabosses, though, I've typically been able to handle with my regular exploration team as well.  Fighting bosses like Urchild (original, in particular), though, is indeed likely to be greatly aided by specialty teams. ^_^

I've only ever used a single party, though occasionally I swapped members in and out.

Yeah, I practically one-hundred-percented EO1 (I think I was missing one postgame boss-drop item from the list, finished everything else) without creating more than the 5 characters on my main party. Landsknecht, Dark Hunter, Survivalist, Alchemist, Medic.

...Mind, the medic's Immunize was extremely broken in EO1, so it counterbalanced the ridiculous megabosses somewhat. Probably definitely wouldn't have managed the postgame fights without my healydude. :P

It's not that I didn't like the idea of having more people on my team, but I was so attached to my main group by the time it would've mattered that it didn't feel right to break them up or bench them.

Was Primevil even mechanically possible without L5 anti-fire/volt/cold?

Well. I beat it, so evidently possible, yes. :P

It sure took a lot of tries, though. It was a long time ago, but I recall it being pretty luck-based even with an optimal strategy. A boosted immunize gives your party something like 85% damage reduction across the board, which made it possible to tank one of the elemental attacks from full health without wiping, but even with that it was a major hassle.
