What would be wiser to do? Wrap electronics in aluminum foil, or a Faraday cage when a solar storm passes?

The likelyhood that the world will end on December 21st is less than one-ten-thousandth of a percent. That is because they found an older calendar that goes beyond the one that these Doomsday prophecies are based on.

Now stop your fear-mongering like that pussy John Cusack and don't worry about the end of the world until it happens. There's no point worrying about something that hasn't happened yet.

I don't worry about Doomsday. I worry about the day after it; especially if DD doesn't come.

Society will be something to be a tad worried about, depending on how it reacted to the "fated day".

Overall, that's why I wouldn't spend my day any differently, or at least, give myself a reason to get hammered and stoned at the same time. I mean, it'll be a day to look back on and laugh. BTW, I will have plenty of material to use for my 10-year high-school reunion, since it's around the corner next year.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The Mayans never believed the end of the world would happen. They, however, did believe that a great change would happen at the end of their year. At this point, with the poles in shift and the Sun on her period, it's reasonable to assume that a solar flare is a possible threat to our electrical infrastructure.

That is pretty bizarre logic, since it asserts that the end of the Mayan calendar has relevance to the end of the world. Even if the conclusion is, for the moment, correct.
>implying the Mayan calendar had any relevance to anyone outside of drug-addled hippies.

Even if the poles did shift, it would have a minimal effect on human society. Though we would, for a short period between 1,000 and 10,000 years, have several north and south poles all over Earth before it resets to two.

I plan on going out while under the influence of as many substances as possible. Hopefully this will allow me to die in the apocalypse without noticing.

Poles aren't in shift. They're showing signs they may shift within the next few (ten?) thousand years.

Actually, we're behind schedule for the next reversal by several hundred thousand years, and fluctuations in the core have been observed that are consistent with an upcoming shift.

The real point is that the fearmongering vastly overstates the dangers. The magnetic field isn't going to fail, it's going to weaken slightly for a few centuries. We'll see auroras across a much greater part of the atmosphere and cancer incidence rates will probably increase slightly, but that's about it.

But, Dice, we need to freak out about something!  Otherwise Hollywood would be unable to make terrible disaster movies! :P

Isn't there a possibility that a weakening of the magnetic field could lead to sudden electronic death syndrome?
