Found DF way back- when DF was 2D from Something Awful's Boatmurdered.  I liked cold biomes, so I modded in some Mammoths(furry elephants) and had fun playing.  Lost a lot of forts due to flooding accidents, as this was a time when a single misplaced floodgate would end your fort...

Heard about it from Minecraft.

The very first time I played it, I thought the world generator was the entire game and was like "This game is bullshit. It's like ProgressQuest but without being funny."

Then I found out how to play.

I was browsing TVTropes, and DF was given as a counter example of nearly every combat mechanics trope, so that got my interest.

Boatmurdered.  Holy shit!  The depth... the expansive options... the story unfolding from the gameplay itself... the insanity potential.  I had to try that.

I.. don't remember actually..

Same here. I feel like I must have always known about it. I have no clue where I learned about it from.

God Himself whispered it in your ear whilst you slept.

On topic: I found out about it through a friend on Steam. He kept raving about how amazing it was, but never mentioned the ASCII graphics. It took me a month to finally get up the courage to learn the game. Oh, right, and after spending a lot of time learning the ASCII graphics, THEN I found out about tilesets.  ::)

I think I was watching a Terraria let's play on Youtube when the person running it had a guest on who played the game. I had never heard of it before, but the way they talked about how complex it was I just had to see what the fuss was about!

TvTropes led me here. I read something about a dwarf woman whose baby got killed during a siege and she went around 'searching for baby' or something, and I was like "dafuq" and looked it up.

A guy on my high school forum (RIP) made a thread about it. I went to bed so late that day.

One of my friends from middle school kept talking about how he was building over complicated traps to catch giant badgers.  After a few weeks of him talking about stuff like that, I had to try it out.
But if it wasn't for that, TvTropes would of pulled me in eventually.  It has that power.

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup got me into Roguelikes in general.

I proceeded to check out many similar games; DF being one of them. I was actually initially put off by the complexity and left it for about six months before coming back and finding DF2012 just out, figured 'lets try this again', and this time, it stuck.

I asked some friends about really hard games that would keep me busy for a while. I was pointed to I Wanna Be The Guy, Super Meat Boy, Battletoads, and Dwarf Fortress. From that list this is the only one I haven't beaten yet and I honestly don't think I ever will or even can
