Not sure yet, I still haven't made it out of spring, and now a "Rotten Monarch Butterfly Corpse" has starting spreading miasma through the front gate.

In the 2D version, vermin remains generate miasma. This was taken out since at least DF2010 (I started with DF2010, and played the 2D version just to try it out; I don't know about 40d though). I'd actually like to see vermin remains generating miasma in the next release (or a modding option to allow them to do so).

What's the wildlife in the area like?

Around summertime, you'll get a metalsmith carrying an anvil. Until then I'd suggest getting some farms set up (this could be a little complicated). Make sure you bring all the food stocks inside, because outside rain washes away seeds in this version.

Carp don't even exist in 23a - they weren't added until version 0.27.169.32a, when the game went 3D.

We have a cougar and a couple herds of groundhogs, haven't seen anything else yet.
