UPDATE:

8th Malachite
Our metal operations can now begin! Reg Boatheather, a metalsmith, has arrived with our first anvil!
He shall be added to the main page, along with any others that may follow him.

UPDATE:

21st Malachite
It seems that out metalsmith came alone, but fortress work is progressing onward!
Our carpenter's shop and fishery have been moved inside, an area has been mined out to host our smithing operations for once we can start. The river now has a bridge over it, so we can now reach the other side, and two chunks of obsidian have been mined out, and shall soon be made into the fort's first weapons. We have a small meeting/dining hall, now, so we aren't eating off the floor anymore. And to the southern part of the river, I noticed some ore of iron! We may have steel in the future!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, i spotted a small patch of a cave spider web on the river shore, before a miner stepped on it and destroyed it, but it's useful to note.

Yeah the metalsmiths come alone. This guy is like one of the starting seven, or starting eight.

In 23a, cave spider webs are actually generated from time to time, so it is possible to have a clothing industry sustained on silk.

Watch out for ambushes - in this version you get snakeman ambushes out of the river and out of wells, so be prepared.

all right, well, we've now got some rock swords, and I'm in the process of making bronze for some more stuff, so hopefully those bad guys won't come till we're ready.
Thanks for the info

EDIT:  Oh, yeah, I killed the mule for food, we were getting low

They'll only attack us if we use the cave river for water. That said, use it for water alot, because I'll learn quicker with some live targets.

Also, it is advisable to build "safety net" bridges downstream from the main one so  we lose fewer in the floods.

If the government doesn't like it they can take it up with Splint's pointy things and militia.

If you want to start farming, you'll need to dig out an area to flood or set up some floodgates. This means either digging a room open to the cave river, or setting up some floodgates. Just remember that a 7x7 open area or greater underground will cave in sometime or other in this version, and if you want to use floodgates you need a way to stop the flood (i.e. doors). Floods are very dangerous in this version.

I was more thinking them coming to shut it down and the militia killing the shutdown crew.

But we have a magma cannon.  Why not just accidentally hit the "On" switch when they are shutting it down?
