Right.

Send the overseer and 40 plebs off to chop some wood.

Send the Geologist with one soldier as a escort (and possible sacrifice) to the North to look around.

Have the engineer draw up plans for a dock and as soon as 20 wood is chopped have him grab some plebs from the wood chopping detail to make it.

Have the 9 remaining soldiers start a watch on the area, three shifts, eight hours each, three soldiers each.

And I vote the last guy be a Scholar.

Eh, I'll just +1 Cript's.
+1 to Cript's
Why not have the overseer join the exploration group? More suitable. Otter than that, +1.

What do you mean? The overseers job is to oversee the plebs as they do various menial jobs. I'm not sure how it would help in a Geologist exploration.

Edit: At least that is what I assume the overseers job is. I am not sure of course as information is scant.

"Send the overseer and 40 plebs to chop wood" sounds like the overseer would be chopping wood. Besides, the overseer should know the layout of the island.

Yeah, he should see over the land.

"See over the land"? That sounds like. Uh. A geologists job. Maybe you are thinking of the bureaucrat when you are thinking of all this getting the lay of the land?

Actually, I was making a joke.  Get it?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seriously though, the overseer has to know the lay of the land.  He says what goes where, so he needs to know if there is a river nearby, or a hill, or a quarry.  That's part of his job.

If he knows where things are, first-hand, he can make better choices.

Then again, don't let the plebs do important things on their own. Often, it will not work out right.

How about the expert in rocks? Or in ridiculous fake gasses? Or in the complex innards of machines?

Or maybe... Maybe... Just maybe. The expert in watching plebs to make sure they do what they are told to?

You mean the guy who needs to understand the island so he can make the best choices, as opposed to the guys who have nothing they need to do? He can watch the plebs next week. This week, he's discerning tactically and strategically vital information.

Also, they're chopping trees.  What could they fuck up about that?  If a tree falls on them, they're probably too stupid to be useful.

If they chop off a limb, we have a new subject for our steam-powered limbs project!
