Hah. "Professor, can I interrupt your ego-trip so we can watch a guy jump from SPEHSS?"

Yeah, that will work real well.  :P
23 miles is not space. It's rather high, but space only starts around 100 (or was it 70) Kilometers.
It's close enough to space to qualify as space for most people.
It's only 1/3 of the way to the Karman line, which isn't pure space too. So no, way to low to qualify as space.

Really, he barely leaves the Troposfere. It's only 6 km above the highest plane flight. (Rocketplanes don't count)

Okay, okay....still closer to space than any of us schleps is ever going to get.  ::)

Speak for yourself. I'm seeing space if its the last thing any of you ever do.

"If you want to perform experiments in a near-space environment, then all you have to do is send up a research balloon to an altitude of around 25 miles above Earth. At this altitude, the balloon is above 99.95 percent of the atmosphere, and is virtually in a vacuum."

-a website I just found

But yeah, space is about twice that, for normal purposes. But this is pretty much effectively "space environs", it just means they can take a balloon instead of a rocket.

Inflating balloon looks kinda' like giant sky jellyfish.

Somewhat terrifying.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Space is defined by the Karman line placed at 100 km. Though 90% of the athmosphere is below 16 km, so that info might very well be correct.

Also, balloons got to 50 km, though those were unmanned.

Third, someone let that guy take a paper plane. Allows us to break another altitude record.

On the other hand, is which band of stuff he'd be jumping from really relevant?

Anyway, aborted for today. Damn.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Jumping from space would be awesome. And deadly.

Actually, it'll need to be classified as a non capsule reentry.

I'm pretty sure orbital insertion is eventually the goal, though. Coming home from the space station? Simply step out the airlock! ;)

And okay, it's a bit more than twice (63 instead of 50 miles).

Well, damn. Oh well, keeping the stream running was overheating my laptop anyways. Think I saw somewhere that they'd try again on Thursday.

Problem with that is the nonlinear progression of athmosphere density. For the first 120 kilometers(Taking from the ISS) everything is a breeze. Then you meet the other 90% of the athmosphere, which will be interesting. (And hot)

Posting to follow. All their feeds still say it was/is happening, but I haven't seen any streamage. Even so, at least the start/stop approach helps build up the hype, right? All in all, a victory for science.

Amusingly enough, they missed their weather window because of an overheating transmitter in the capsule.
