"None of it. This protocol is not a problem. How many decades has it been? Plenty. I guarantee we won't find anything too deadly... Annd on the off chance we do then while the other ships are tied up with whatever we can easily skate off and pick up the scraps."

It would be far mor useful to strap the computer expert to a generator.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

I have been thinking about the message. I wonder if the problem experienced in the shipyards might have been some sort of biological issue. A disease outbreak, perhaps. This would explain the unusual amount of medical supplies requested. Humans are quite frail. And when many are confined in a small area like a space station, an outbreak of a new deadly disease can be disastrous.

I suggest we quietly pick up a few hazmat suits.

I already proposed a quarantine area, now your want to give them a bath? Next thing you know they'll be getting caviar and medical attention...

In fact I like installing small prison\isolator\quarantine area at Mining vessel. Just in case

PTW, also, can someone summarize what happened to the mining op we were escorting between pages 25 and 95 (i skipped those in my reading ...).

ERM, biological disease outbreak isn't an issue enough to quarantine a whole system .. i'd be more worried about something technological capable of traveling through space. Given that the system lockdown was important enough to destroy the in-bound jump bridges, not just the out-bound ones (ie, they wanted to guarantee that no-one else entered), it's a safe bet that we're going to need good sensors, some type of exotic energy field, or other scientific equipment to diagnose what is going on.

Hell if I know.  Pretty humourous suggestion, but utterly useless in the case of roleplaying, if indeed the whole game world was one whole huge ass field of fruit.

Do energy shields exist?

early on that question was asked -- basically, yes, but a) they are uncommon, b) they eat huge amounts of energy, c) they don't work against missiles and mass drivers.

but yes, i can see that it would be useful in this situation, shields to repel hostile space dust of whatever type is out there might be worth giving up 2 lazers worth of energy to keep at bay.

Thats assuming that whatever was wasn't some type of science experement that escaped a shielded and armored facility to begin with ...

any bets on what we are facing?

it probably won't be anything capable of building jump engines, or controlling humans/technology, or else it could escape by itself ..

edit: we need good IR sensors, and we already have a good computer, to do a quick system survey using IR emissions (1 hr after arival we should have a catalogue of approximate mass and location of all objects in the system warmer than background).

Jumpbeacons form pairs; If one of the two goes down, the other loses it's guidance signal, significantly hampering it's calculations.

"Protocol 23 Engaged. System lockdown. Code: H7K8D9A9I0D7 234 ..." implies deliberate lockdown, ie, self-destruction, of the gate, and if nothing else has left that system since then, then it could be that both ends destructed.

I'm would guess that given a couple of weeks sitting still you could calculate the jump from scratch without the aid of jump-beacons?

(or am i just reading too much into the situation? )
(i'm bored at home atm, so i might end up over-thinking things :)

My sense of a system lockdown is that either it was an automated system entering a self-preservation mode. Or that someone is using an override code to seal access to the star system. Given the hidden nature of the message, either it was a secret system, someone was getting clever with data compression, or that something was set up to receive such messages. All of this speculation tells us approximately zilch. Could you tell if the data was deliberately obscured as opposed to just a form of data compression to encode multiple signals in a single feed? I imagine that they have phone bills in the future and programmers with spare time...

Assuming there's nothing interfering with the jumpdrive, then yes. The Surveyor ship can do it significantly faster.

However, calculating a jump without beacon, is well, inaccurate.

nothing else has left that system since then,

well, not that anyone knows, otherwise we wouldn't be about to go looking for a "missing" system.

Were the Kadung shipyards part of the rebellion? Any survivors might not be aware of their defeat. We should be prepared for the fact that any people there might still think there's still a war going on.
