That is a lot of ships with nowhere to go if trouble comes up. The expedition might give you an opportunity to steal some crew...

Agreed. The expedition sounds like a good idea.

...Well, for the story at least.

You examine the mining vessel's internal structure to see if upgrading it's firepower would be viable. With some entrepreneural engineering, you remove the wall between the 2 railguns.  Using some bought parts, you rewire the system, adding the magnets of one railgun to the other, while significantly increasing it's caliber. Extra cooling systems are also needed and added, and you add those. Luckily, the power plugs appear to be capable of standing up to the forces subject to them. Repeated firing might have averse effects on the structure of the ship though.

You also look at the way the civilian reactor on the mining ship is boosted. It appears they skimped on the reactor containment field, making it more likely to fail when damaged, and also having it emit slightly more radiation. Still, nothing outside the safety norms of a normal civilian vessel.

After that, you hail the expeditionary fleet. Suprisingly, you're quite rapidly connected to the expedition leader, a somewhat older man, who doesn't look like someone who gives in easily.

Perhaps I should take a crack at decoding that last signal from Kadung, being a computer program, decoding should probably come pretty easily to me.

Is that failed mining charge incredibly dangerous?

Food, fuel, and how many of each?

Range is unlimited, but there's a certain deviation, which will remain unknown till you fire it.

Is that failed mining charge incredibly dangerous?
Apparently the detonator ran out of battery power some time ago. So no.

On another note, the coming system revamp will see the removal of heat, abstraction of energy mechanics and some other thingies.

There's technical range (star-systems away), then there's practical range, which accommodates for such factors as imperfect aim, deviations from ideal trajectory due to distant massive bodies and the like, and (of course) the tendency of enemies to adjust their velocity to avoid the attack.

I suggest

a) offer protection to the expedition, ask for 40%, if rejected ask for 30% if that rejected too, hint that space is quite pirate infested and make a last offer of 25%
b) spend 150 credits on fuel, 150 on food, spread it over our both our vessels
c) Try to find some crew. Even if that teenagers without skills.
d) Leave pirates at the black market, saying that we don't want them to get executed  and suggest them to find a new job. Stating that many opportunities exist (e.g. Hint them to join crew, but not force to do that. If they agree assign to secondary roles and be wary of them for some time)
e) Make 10 shells for our new ubergun
f) fix the detonator of the mining charge.  Load missile rack with all remaining mining charges. Load fighters with HM missiles
h) use our cheap electronics, some cash and coding to improve targeting of the mining ship, it's pointless to have a heavy gun when it will not hit
e) Look for possibility to install a simple hydroponic system on the mining vessels, capable to survive without power at least  a day for situations when we'll have a damaged reactor or will need to use it for firing the heavy gun. Spend the rest of cash on that, not only we can use it ourself, fresh food may be sold for hard cash to other expedition members

And remember, that by keeping the mining vessel we are going into  more semi-legal area. That's not a problem for long range expeditions but may create problems with a law in other places

I find that a value for effective range often comes up in weapon descriptions which is well under the maximum possible range. So lets put together a few rounds, test-fire the thing, and calculate the distance at which it could reasonably expect to hit an evasive Salvation. Try to rate our other weapons by the same scale.

a) offer protection to the expedition, ask for 40%, if rejected ask for 30% if that rejected too, hint that space is quite pirate infested and make a last offer of 25%
b) spend 150 credits on fuel, 150 on food, spread it over our both our vessels

a)40% of what? Everything that they find? The usual rate for mercenaries? The profits from the expedition(it doesn't seem likely that they will be salvaging the thing)? A 40% share in the shipyards if they become operational?
b) I am not clear on the economies yet, but that is a number so I will vote for it...
c) Advertise as a great opportunity for discovery and adventure.
d) meh, may as well, unless someone else comes up with something.
e) agreed
f) Disarm the mining charge and try to rework it into a remote-detonated shrapnel charge for use against fighter squadrons and missile clouds.
h) agreed
e) agreed

You start your negotiations with the expedition leader. They negotiations are rather though, and in the end this is the man's final offer. 15% on the profit of the endeveaur, but you get to keep the loot of any of the pirate ship's you down during the mission. It's your choice wherether you accept, but he does send through the message for the AI to look at.

There's not much people looking for a new crew, but there are some. As usual, there's a bunch of youngsters willing to run away from their homes. There's a bunch of engineers seeking a new job, but they are not likely to stay long, and they want to get paid. (10 cr/person/month). Then there's a bunch of rather shady people, who'd like to work for a trip to the next port, providing you're heading into pirate terretory, as they heard. Some of the pirates want to stay too.

You design and meld together 10 massive shells for the Large railgun cannon. They'd be a pain to move, if not for the zerogravity present in space. Some attempts are also made to improve targetting, and they work, though the active targetting system is highly noticable. You entertain the idea of testfiring it, but you'd think some people would frown on that.
