An adventurer is You!
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:02:09 pm »

I've been inspired by some of these RP threads, notably Gamerboy4life's "You own a interstellar mercenary company!" thread. So, I decided to start my own--something simple that everyone here knows at least fairly well.
Specifically, adventuring in DF.

The plan is, I describe a situation, then wait for a few people to post or a few hours (or more, occasionally) to pass and someone to post, then I go with the most popular option (tie-breakers going by most detailed, in-character, or amusing suggestions). Anyone who posts before I start typing a reply will be included. I might include some options, but you can try to do pretty much anything, as long as it's not too stupid or ludicrous, and is fairly in-character or extremely amusing. (Dwarves befriending goblins? Probably O.K. Elves burning down a forest? Probably not.)

So, let's get started. The first few questions will mostly be figuring out what kind of adventurer and person you are, starting with race.

-----

Adventurer Status:
Spoiler: Vitals (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Party (click to show/hide)

-----

You are in a town, specifically in a large house. A human, balding and clearly past his prime, burst through the door, shouting, "Fire! Fire!"
Do you...
A. Stroke your beard and turn towards the human, because you are a dwarf?
B. Turn your pointy ears towards him, because you are an elf?
C. Stand tall and face him, because you are also a human?
D. Grin at the thought of the fire, because you are a goblin?
E. Glance up, trying to have a look of innocence in your luminous yellow eyes, because you are a kobold?
F. Do something else, because you are some other race? (Name the race, and ideally the action.)
(While we're at it, what gender do you want the adventurer to be?)

Clearly, we are a stick figure seal clubber in the kingdom of loathing. Fire is a normal occurence within a few blocks of the guild of chef mages.

Alright, one vote for murloc and one for stick-figure-seal-clubber. One vote for female. Let's see if we can get some sort of consensus before I go to bed.

We're a Kitsune.(I hope.) Smarter than humans, but humans. Except they have fox tails and ears.

And I say we pimp-slap the guy for yelling inside the house, knocking him out so we can take all his stuff.
If that fails, we can always go see what it is he's screaming about.

Possibly.

Either that or my life has devolved to the point that to stave off boredom I have resorted to correcting people on the internet.

Truly the pinnacle of Nothing To Do.

Geez, I let this rest for 18 hours or so, and nothing happens.

Okay...Wrex, would you prefer to be a kitsune or a murloc?

It's been long enough, I'll go with the choice less likely to cause freak-outs.

The man pauses, glancing at you without recognition.

Who are you, and should the man recognize you? I'll blend the results as best as I can if there's no clear victor by tomorrow night.

We're a trader, not known by name in any town but known by appearance.

Nah, he shouldn't know us. We have stuff in our room! It's slapping time!

And here I thought this was abandoned. Let's get this adventure started.

-----

You slap the man. He pauses, hurt both physically and emotionally. "Look, miss, we need every able hand to help. A dragon attacked not too long ago, and while we drove it off the fires it set are still burning."
"And why should I help?" you ask.
Glancing around, he replies, "These wares will burn along with your customers if you don't help." That is a persuasive argument.

You help out by running empty buckets back to the Eel River, a good-sized river running through town. You are in Redbank, a town a few miles upstream from the sea. It is noted for being a place of wealth, between trades with the eelmen who give the river its name and its thriving pottery industry, as well as being the largest town within a dozen miles that isn't fortified against some foe or another. Just the target for a dragon's raids. Redbank's citizens live mainly on houseboats floating in the wide expanse of the river, but their businesses and the homes of the less fortunate will burn fine.
As you run back towards the river, a faint shadow passes overhead. You glance up and see, farther up than a human's eye could see, the dragon hiding in a cloud. You're not an expert on dragons, but it looks like it's about to dive. You may have under a minute before it attacks. You glance around, noting a forge, abandoned by its owner nearby, as well as a small hut on the riverbank and some sort of armed vessel floating in the river.
What do you do?

Go to the forge. You assume that dragons have two exploitable qualities:

1. If it's got any intelligence, dragons love loot. If there's something gold or suitably awesome on the forge, offer for a truce.

2. If not, get a bow. Blind fire is better than no fire, and while you've never used more than a knife, you might get lucky.
