It's a fantastic story-making machine. I don't even play it anymore, and I still have lots of fun seeing what people imagine and write, from two-lines citations to very very large stories

Dwarf Fortress has redefined my concept of fun in games. Consequently it's redefined my concept of what a game developer should aim for when designing a game. 

furthermore, it's probably the greatest example of the power of coding in a game.

I'm amazed at the dedication Toady has for the game; I'm amazed at the results of his dedication. Greatest game of all time. Ever.

What does Dwarf Fortress to me? I only really have a complicated answer to that, seeing as it's somewhat more than a game for me.

as a sort of tl;dr I can say that it's not everything to me, but it's very important nonetheless.

As a longer answer I'll say that, well, It's more than a game. It's sort of a reminder.
I stopped being a dedicated gamer a long time ago. Well, a long time ago to me;
probably when I was around 15-16. Before that I had played video games steadily,
at least 4 hours a day or so if I could. Sometimes way more. I first learned of
video games at the age of 6, and nothing had ever mesmerized me as much. To live
in such fantastic worlds, to live vicariously through someone else's eyes? someone
better than me? No wonder I was so anti-social most of the time. Then again, the
more I played, the more something felt amiss: things didn't feel the same. Originality
vaned within games as I got older, or rather, maybe it was that it became easier to
spot? Either way, games started to become more and more of an obligation to myself
rather than the escape that it had always been.
Eventually I just said "fuck it" to myself and mostly stopped playing.
This was around the time I discovered Dwarf Fortress. It's one of a few games that
have ever managed to give me back that childish joy of games, the one where you
can't wait to fall asleep at night so you can get up in the morning to play more. Such
bliss is uncommon.
    I've had to wade through a lot of petty bullshit in my life, mostly of my own
fault, sometimes because of others. You know, like everyone else has to, I guess.
Games used to be a constant in my life, something I could rely on.
   Dwarf Fortress brought that childish bliss right back up. It offered a whole world.
Something to discover, something to learn and master, and an ample opportunity to
roleplay. It actually lets you get to know people in a game, something that's uncommon.
That's why I'm always drooling over the future social interactions and so on. To me it's...
beautiful? Maybe.
     If it wasn't for Dwarf Fortress I don't know if I'd ever play another video game
again. So jaded had I become, but every now and then I buy, or download a new game.
What the Adams brothers keep reminding me of is that games don't all have to be
absolutely fucktarded experiences you've had a hundred times before. It's not just about "fun.
Sometimes they can be unique --in fact many of them are. Even if a game is bad, it can
be a unique experience. I don't often find games that are that wonderful though
(Under The Ocean is the most recent game that is close to wonderful, kind of).
Games is its own medium, full of wonderful experiences.
While sometimes I forget that, Dwarf Fortress sits right on my desktop, ready to remind me
yet again why I play games at all.

It's also worth noting that it's also the source of a lot of my inspiration. It brings back
a lot of what has driven me to become a painter in the first place; to create worlds,
people, personalities and wonder.  Inspiration I've always gotten from games, because it
has something that movies tend to lack most of the time: crazy worlds, people and so on.

Dang, Tofu. I can relate to that so much, it surprises me.  The amazing worlds, to "see the worlds through other's eyes", etc was also one of the main draws into games for me.

I don't paint, but I do like to draw my own inspirations from various games and ideas from my own game-fueled imagination.

Dwarf Fortress is a sort of stress/unspent ambition release for me. I always get frustrated looking at the incompetence of governments, but since I'm a teenage I can't really vote to change anything. DF gives me the ability to expend that frustration in a manner that improves the quality of life for smiley faces that rely completely upon me for their every need. It also lets me feel like I have control over something in my life, which is rare (I'm in a fairly strenuous academic program, so homework consumes a lot of my time, and forces me to work within boudaries that are often restrictive).

DF also matches almost perfectly the type of game I've always wanted to play, one with dynamic histories, backstories, and events, with plenty of focus on both the small characters and the larger scale. I love how it's basically a novel writing itself as I play, and observe the tragedies and triumphs of the peoples under my command. If DF had graphics to match its awesomeness I'd literally do anything to posess it; as it stands though, I think the imagination-powered graphical system fits perfectly and only adds to the game's fun.

Additonally, I add my voice to the chorus of agreement with Tofu. Bravo and well said, good sir!

What a friend. Why do you put up with these people waffle? Your the person who started the entire program by wondering how many people play df.
