Well, dwarf means to me a little person, or other non-human humanoid with a relatively smaller height, but with connotations of broader stature for all that, having a probably subterranean preference for most, if not all, aspects of living and working and (influenced as I am by Sir PTerry's take on the meme) largely indistinguishable between the genders, very much tended towards being masculine males in attitude and appearance (regardless of actualities of sex, sexuality and gender), to be hidden behind chainmail, leather, beard and a weapon of choice.
OTOH, a fortress is like a fort, only female, right?
(As to the game... It's a time-sink. The hub and the glue for an online community of much[1] intelligence. An artwork in progress (i.e. a female 'prog') by its creator. A paradigm of design that should at least be studied, if not necessarily followed, by other developers. It's raw and visceral in its conceptualised nature; in the face it presents to the world; and in the stories it generates. And, much, much more. I don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread (because there have been better things than sliced bread arising all the time, since sliced bread came about), but it'll probably survive at least the first few redrafts of the short-list I would have to draw up in order answer to that particular hypothetical[2].)
[1] Yeah, I'll chance my arm and say that without any reservations.
[2] A working space-elevator, for example, would probably edge DF out of contention. Well, as soon as I get my ride on it it will.
