Show him the troll horns and our "Shield". It may be enough of an offer, or could at least impress him.

We all have our own problems. Tell him that if things pick up you'll be found in a tavern, somewhere, and work on dealing with the problems at hand.

I do believe he already saw the horns. We were showing them off and passing off luck as skill.

We should get going to the castle. Now.

Support.

You and the mercenary leader amicably part ways. He once again thanks you for the "job tip" as you mount your horse. You ride north. Truth be told, you're probably not the best rider ever, having only ever ridden a handful of times on slow farm horses. You find this steed to be terrifyingly fast! Even at a slow gallop, the buildings in town blur past you and you find yourself at the gate, which Thomas has arranged to be open for you.

You hit the open road and immediately veer off the road and head north-east towards the Castle Frinardus. The course you take starts off smooth and flat, filled with farmland. You dig your heels into the horses sides and he happily breaks into a run, flying through the fields at a breathtaking pace.

The land becomes hilly and your pace slows as the sun rises. You are exhausted, you realize that you've only slept for a few minutes in the exhausting hours since lunch time of yesterday. Suddenly, perched on a cliff-side, you see a large, stone building. You steer towards it, and a few minutes later you can see that it is a castle. This must be Castle Frinardus.

The castle is quite an impressive fortress compared to Castle Delninar. It has high stone walls surrounding a tall keep. Flags showing the golden thrones of the Confederacy of Pickling as well as several other symbols fly proudly from its ramparts. The castle is nestled into a crook in the cliff in such a way that makes it only accessible from the west, all other sides being nearly sheer cliffs guarded by a low wall at the top. The western approach is covered by a dry moat, the main curtain wall, and gatehouse. This curtain wall is very high, at least 3 times your height, it has a strong, fortified tower at either end. The gatehouse in the middle has a drawbridge and portcullis. It has many arrow slits facing every direction to guard against any possible route of assault.

You ride into the small village at the foot of the hill and loudly proclaim that you have an important message for whoever is in charge. You are eventually lead up to the castle to meet with the commander of the guard there. He introduces himself as Captain Harold. You give him a letter from Thomas warning them of the possibility of a goblin assault. You tell him all you can of the attack on Delninar. Your warning is once again followed by a flurry of activity. Horns are sounded and guards run all around making preparations. Messengers are sent out to gather as many of the peasants and supplies from the surrounding villages as they can quickly gather into the castle. Scouts are sent out towards Delninar and another rider is sent out to warn Duke Jarin, although Harold is doubtful that he will make it in time.

Harold approaches you, "Samuel, thank you for the warning, we could really use help defending the walls if the goblins do come here. The walls are high and strong, but we have few trained defenders. Can you stay and help us? Of course, I can't blame you if you'd rather get out of here before they arrive."

What do you do?

Admit that while you aren't trained as such, you probably couldn't hurt their chances if you were armed with a bow. You can shoot at incoming gobbos while the walls keep you safe.

But get some shut-eye first, you can't be running around half asleep, especially if you're going to be shooting at them greenskins.

I support this. Possibly eat, too. Basically take care of bodily functions. I should have suggested that our name be Markus, though. Much more awesome.

So do you guys want to change the name? To Markus Thoguh? :P

You tell Captain Harold that you don't really know anything about bow-shooting and, while you can swing an axe as well as the next man, you're not a trained soldier. He's disappointed by this, but says he'd be more than grateful for your help anyway. You explain that you are quite tired and he lets you sleep in the barracks. Nearly all the guards are busy anyway, so the place is pretty deserted.

You are awaken by a strange horn call. You rub your eyes and sit up. Looking out the window, you can see that it must be late afternoon. You feel much better after your nap! You wonder if theres anything around here to eat...

A shout or chant in a language you don't recognize snaps you awake. The shouting grows louder and louder: "Os! Os a ngor–gs! Os!! Os a ngor-gs!! OS!!! OS A NGOR-GS!!!" You grab your axe and equipment and head out the door to see whats going on.

The courtyard of the castle is absolutely packed. Women, children and animals mill around every square inch of the fort. They look frightened. You shove your way through the crowd and up to the gatehouse. There is a large group of armored guards with large shields and halberds standing around the base of the gatehouse. You can see behind them that the gate is closed. You work your way through them and start up the stairs of the gatehouse. You meet Captain Harold on the stairs.

"Whats going on?!" You yell. The sound of shouting is almost deafening! It seems to be coming from beyond the walls. He yells something back at you, but its drowned out by the noise. He hands you the bow he was carrying, and points you up the steps. He then grabs two armored guards and they jog towards the south tower.

You scramble up the steep steps. Upon reaching the top, you gasp at the view before you. The village is on fire, and pouring up the slope towards the castle are thousands of goblins. Their banners and pikes poke up like spires over a vast, armored, green tide. They have formed ranks somewhere around 300 yards short of the curtain wall. You look left and right along the wall, it is dotted with men, crouched behind the ramparts, shaking with terror. You would guess that there are about 100 men with you on the walls, all armed with bows as well as other assorted weaponry. There are probably another 100-200 men on the ground armed mostly with farm tools (axes, pitchforks, sickles, etc). You see several large bins full of arrows placed at regular intervals along the walls. You grab a handful from the nearest bin.

You see several tall ladders among the goblins. They are being passed overhead towards the front of the formation. The ladders probably aren't tall enough to reach you here on top of the gatehouse, but many of them will probably be long enough to get up onto the walls. It looks like they're almost ready to make their assault.

What do you do? Battle Plan!?!

Get a lighter or a flaming arrow however possible and light up those ladders. If that dosen't work, see if you can direct fire on the ladder gobs, because you alone focusing fire won't do much at all compared to a half wall.

Smash those ladders, or push them back down, whichever. Make sure the archers are concentrating on any goblin holding the ladders.
