I always mentally handwaved it as HP being a measure of your luck and courage under fire. Like in the movies, until you get to -0 and below HP it's all 'cinematic damage' and 'flesh wounds' :P

Also, if you have never played d20 modern, take a look at the masisve damage rules. Yeah. Your threshold is your con score :(. Hence why I am not going to throw a pack of Bandits at you at first.

EDIT: I just noticed that the generic strong hero is wearing the holy symbol of St. Cuthbert.
