Realistically, the moon should be the jumping point for any large scale operations in space. A lunar base would be fairly cheap to setup, resource-wise, due to pre-existing research done on building there. Lunarcrete has quite a few advantages over other building materials for lunar operations. It is not, however, airtight; you'd have to use a secondary sealing material. Additionally, research has been done into 3D printers using lunar dust as their printing material; combine that with something like RepRap.

Transporting a large number of people off earth to your selected colonization site is going to be expensive and resource intensive. It'd be more efficient to launch a bare-bones 'ark' from earth, and collect supplies from a lunar base before heading towards your destination. Fuel, oxygen, building materials, water and food can all be prepared at a lunar 'gas station'. If the 'ark' is only used to ferry supplies/people between the moon and, say, Phobos, it'd be safer and more efficient to then get the people onto/off the planet via shuttles from their orbiting satellites, and let the 'ark' be specialized for the long distance trips between the moons.

In regards to long durations in low gravity, research has recently successfully been done into gene modifications that prevent bone loss for mice in low gravity environments.

Now, Herr von Braun, Gott bless that man, had already devised a way for us to get to Mars. The specifics escape me right now, but it was very logical and I very much approved of it. He was a great man, especially for logistic matters. You... you have a good mind for logistics as well. Yes. Yessss. Ehem. Excuse me.

Ah. Here it is: http://www.astronautix.com/craft/vonn1952.htm

We don't really need a lunar installation. I wouldn't advise against it though. A lunar firebase from which we extend our military might would be most ideal. We'd be keeping a watchful eye on those treacherous Earth Federation scum. But for the actual trek to Mars, we don't need to stop over the Moon first.

Also, solar pannels are terrible at absorbing sunlight. Even the most efficient pannels reflect about 60%.
We already got that covered

I did. Sadly that doesn't cover anything. Even photosynthetics aren't efficient enough to be used as cloaking system for space ships. Besides, plants often have trouble surviving in space, even if they are beards.

Also, all your beards are going to die when a martian dust storm strikes.

Maybe first, we should try and colonise a remote part of norther Canada first. I wouldn't want to try colonising another planet before I could successfully colonise a cold mountain on Earth. Let me see... we'll need two picks, bit pointless to bring axes, some wood for the beds, seeds...

But .... It's so small!
It's not the size of the pick that counts... it's the size of the man with the pick.

Seems like a sound idea.

I lend my support to the idea, As it will allow for both a test of our capabilities, and it will instill morale into those doubting our resolve. In addition, it will allow us to terain up our survival skills. While many of those are not applicable on mars, it will help us. In fact, I shall forward it to the highest authority in the land for quick approval.

So should we simulate and perform an actual landing? Cause landing our ship will be a serious part of the mars colonization effort. There are differences in air pressure and gravity but I'm thinking we need some kind of practice for this stuff.

Head of MAGMA here to say I need pilots... so if any of you have participated in the kerbal space program thread I'd totally hire you guys.

Also, our treasury should use cookies instead of gold. I'll try to figure out someway to make them last forever.

Cookies are a bad idea. Any fund-raising bake sale with force inflation through the roof.

We can use silver instead. Or heck, native Martian gems of some sort. Surely some have formed there.
