Boatmurdered in Minecraft
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:27:53 pm »

I don't know where to put this. It's DF-related, and a map, but it is not a fort map. It's a Minecraft map. It's of Boatmurdered.

It's also not done, but I do have a screenshot of the current scale of it! It's based on this photo and keeps the miasma/smoke/doom floating around the corridors.

You can see some key features, like the windy entrance hallway, some bedrooms, a room full of spiderwebs (cages) and a little bit of the underground river.

And now for the story, as it plays kinda like an adventure map on higher difficulties.

The Story

Boatmurdered was on fire. Most of its inhabitants had already been reduced to charred, smouldering corpses. Sprawling projects consumed the echoing halls of the dying fortress, none of them working properly. To anyone inside, it was a hell on earth, filled with acrid smoke and that awful, horrible, eye-stinging miasma. But there was a tiny bit of hope for the fortress, if not its inhabitants. In a different time and place, every living thing in Boatmurdered vanished. Cages were unoccupied. Beds were vacated. The billowing miasma and smoke settled to the ground. What remained was blackened, charred, purple in some places, but intact.

Then the slimes came.

In great numbers they sprang from the earth, bouncing throughout the hallowed corridors of this once-mighty realm. Nobody could stop them - until you came.

So anyway, when it's done you'll be able to walk around inside and kill slimes! However, I had to use a simple visual code for items. Coins are gold ore, gems are diamond ore, cages, ropes, and thread are spiderwebs, trade goods and clothing are circle stone blocks, and so on. Most importantly, traps are wooden pressure plates.

How will you do the chasm? And the FTW device? And what's the closest Minecraft equivalent to elephants and macaques? And are you going to add the headless lizard? And are you going to add stuff from later on in Boatmurdered's history? And...

No, the two active minecraft topics are just IGYNPADCA topics where people pretend they're playing minecraft.

Minecraft died when DF2Minecraft died. Now it's just another outdated DF visualizer.

Minecraft is for people who always wish they knew/enjoyed fully Dwarf Fortress.

In my opinion, it is a 3d visualizer for gnomoria. It is simpler, worse and 3d.

It is still quite entertaining, though I'll never probably never play it on the PC anymore now that I got the X360 version with split-screen multiplayer (still waiting for it to be updated though).

Not equally awesome, no.
They are both good, but minecraft is all about imagination, it is exactly like lego. DF is like if lego and playmobil gained life.

So you took one of the major annoyances of flat minecraft maps and said "fuck this, i'm turning it into a feature!".
I approve.

EDIT:

Also, please dont turn this thread into argumentless minecraft hate. Yes, minecraft has flaws, but that doesnt mean its a big burning pile of worm shit.

Lots of the responses about Minecraft's relative quality were :'( because it's a game, dammit! Not a vessel of self-pity and shame for the Inferior Race of non DF-players! And it's pretty fun as well! And it's pretty pretentious to talk about a fully-made game as a mere tool for the glorious (presumably sparkling) Dwarf Fortress Players to use to make first-person fortresses and... some days it just gets to me :( it's like the minecraft forums all over again

Anyway, question time!

I'm going to answer these as if the reader knows nothing about Minecraft because some of you guys don't play it. This is for information purposes and I'm not trying to act condescending :P
  • We have slade and HFS, Minecraft has a no-sell block called bedrock which is essentially slade. If you break through it (which can be done in Creative mode) then a bottomless pit awaits below, which damages and kills you if you fall too far. It's a perfect fit for the chasm.
  • I was thinking that I could use pistons and lava, but lava doesn't flow very well so who knows? Or maybe the ceiling could split open and pour lava on everyone (it could be made of glass with lava above, providing somewhat good illumination AND a source of burning).
  • Not much, wildlife is severely lacking in Minecraft so you'll just have to pretend that the slimes are somehow related.
  • There isn't much later on, and I don't want to try because it would get even more clusterfucked.
People still care about Minecraft?
No, this map is actually an ironic statement about consumer culture in modern America.

I said Minecraft is cool on every post. It is cool.

But DF is better for me as a game, since it provides more fun to me, though this isn't truth for most people. Minecraft is much easier and simpler, it provided me a lot of fun when I started playing (mainly on the "Normal" mode or whatever it is called that is not building mode nor adventure) but after a while it gets extremely boring. I never got bored with DF because there is never enough, you'll never get to end-game.

Once you farmed diamond and went to hell there is really nothing much to do on Minecraft. Most people enjoy it for the construction/building mode whatever it is called and yes it is the most fun, redstone circuits are really cool but it doesn't get much better than that. That said, IMO, the very best minecraft has to offer, is the most basic DF has, except in 3d.

And stonesense is good enough graphics for me, actually even better than 3d.
