What are the other minors going to do, cross the ocean on stick rafts and attack us? No no, they are quite isolated from us, no matter how they feel about the Yangjun savages.

They'll stop trading with us, and we won't be able to win them over diplomatically.  For some minors, this means nothing.  For others, it could hurt (no more cotton!).

Why would we care about trading with the profligates when we can simply conquer them?

Exactly. Plus our imports are mostly secure from the fickle actions of uncivilized beings. Our iron comes from Penia, who are almost in our pocket, and the discovery of the coal deposits greatly reduces our need on the foreign market. Unless Kroko decides to intervene, Yangjun is ours, no doubts about it.

Now onto more pressing matters. Has anybody read the papers lately? Yes? Then you'll know about the deplorable fact that beards are apparently no longer 'in style'...

1821
The Bloody Tundra

*Prime Minister Seamas appears at the podium.  It does not go unnoticed he has shaved his beard.*

EuchreJack was right about the minor-nations.  Illustrated, our impacted political relations.  Nothing to worry about.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the Summer of 1820, our troops swept over the Yungjan province of Chingji with great success.  Our casualties were only a few hundred.  We have since occupied the frigid northern province.  We also formed an alliance with Fratzlerg, who were clearly impressed by our display of heavy-handed might.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the autumn of 1820, I commissioned our first naval vessel, the FF Mountainhome.  Sheīs a beauty.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have some disturbing news.  All has not gone well on the northern campaign, and there are other eminent problems facing Uristia.  The fall campaign on Yungjan City was a bloody disaster.  The bitter tundra weather weakened our brave troops on their long march to that desolate icy port where the Yungjan had prepared sturdy defenses (presumably out of blocks of ice).
Upon assault, the savages fought back with ferocious resolve and our casualties were appalling.  As many as five thousand troops were killed or wounded - perhaps half our force.  Itīs a damn catastrophe!  The statistics are displayed for your perusal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Attempting to keep the Yungjans at bay while our troops lick their wounds in Chingji, the Mountainhome was dispatched to blockade the port.  Already she has repelled two foreign trading vessels that were shipping in goods to the enemy.  (That was actually in the paper, but I lost the screenie.)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The problem now is that we need to bolster our army to finish the job, but weīre having a hard time coming up with the resources.  Our coal supply is nearly online.  Our cotton gins will increase our cotton output, yes, but for now weīre dearly short on iron ore, coal, steel, and raw textiles.
Mainly, our economyīs demand for inputs has grown in order to keep pace with our competitors, but weīve not yet accomodated in supply of raw resources.  This may be a good time to put the invasion on hiatus and focus on expanding our economy, lest we grow too top heavy.  Not to mention weīre running on a slight deficit at the moment.  We should step carefully.
That is all.  Hail Uristia!

*steps down from the podium*

The brave men of Uristia have not backed down from a fight before, and by Jingo they won't while I have a say! Still, our army has suffered a battering, make no mistake. Therefore I suggest that our glorious army establish defensive positions and wait for reinforcements. In the meantime we should take all steps necessary to improve our economy and re-invigorate the might of the proud Uristian army.

Now then, onto other matters. As you've no doubt heard, pigtails are now 'passe'. Such show of follicle fortitude is no doubt in support for the recent clashes by the Uristian army, as our brave youth cut their hair as our soldier did before the gates of Yangjun City. However I suspect that these hair cuttings will not end up as coats for our officers, and therefore a collection should be taken up...

Yup, the capital city of each minor nation is a tough nut to crack.  I strongly suggest conquering all of their other provinces, and leaving the capital alone until we have more forces.

Corai comes into Seamus's office with papers.

I believe that if we are going to defeat these savages, we must keep the rest of the world from giving a damn. Give them worthless gifts of impurities and unusable items, make them think we will play nice. Do this over and over to avoid the entire world from attacking us. We dont want the book "World war I" to come to reality, do we?

As Grand Admiral of the Navy we will continue blockading the Yungjan capitol, hopefully denying them the aid of foregin powers in this war.

We would also like to place requests for two sister-ships to the Mountainhome, the Hammerer, and the Ironblood. These will allow us to project our power across the seas and further protect our soverign borders.

Indeed, it may be best if we take their remaining territory and only then move on to the capital; especially considering the fact that their troops, while not as glorious, skilled, prestigious and advanced as our glorious, skillful, prestigious and modern army, has proven to be extremely stubborn.

With the bulk of their forces holding out in the capital, it should not be a difficult task to take the remaining territories, thus eliminating the possibility of them raising any sort of militia dedicated to breaking our siege around their capital.

I hear wise advice all around from the ministers and statesmen.

  • The majority of our troops are being diverted from Chingji province to subjugate the western provinces of Yangjun.  A token force has been left in Chingji to drill local militias and await further orders.  When possible, further troops will be raised in the capitol and marched to the border.
  • The Admiraltyīs request for further frigates has been duly noted and will be served at the soonest possible juncture, though this may yet be several years.
  • Foreign Affairs Minister Corai, I have noted your concerns; in order to strengthen our foreign relations, I will do my best to secure funding for a new embassy in Yubah, which is the second minor nation that is presently under our influence.

Next update coming tomorrow.

While the war with the filthy yungjans is important, no one is focusing the greatest thing that has happened: someone has finally created a mechanical pasta maker! We will be free from the tyranny of manual pasta creation!  I declare that today should become a national holiday!  Happy Robo-Pasta day to everyone!

1826
The Roaring Twenties

Hello all.  Much has come to pass since the last State of Uristia address.

The Mountainhome served our her posting in the far north admirably; certain foreigners would say heavy-handedly...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our revised plan for subjugating foul Yungjan unfolded seamlessly.  In the fall of 1822, our troops liberated the province of Pusan.  Featuring virtually all of the resources we might possibly be interested in, itīs a good acquisition with a cotton-growing region and a nearby hardwood forest.  Our engineer pictured here is contemplating the port that may be built on this massive river once the conquest is complete, and tap both of those resources.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our embassy was opened in Yubah in the fine summer of 1823.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There have been some critical breakthroughs in technology.  I was sure to invest in them right away.  The iron bridge opened up the possibility (at last) to build a port in the swamps at the foot of the Ironblood mountains.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Only a few months after the occupation of Pusan, the northern province of Hwingsong fell to our troops, with virtually no resistance.  Thereīs nothing whatsoever of value in that gelid wasteland, except the outflow of the economically significant Yungjan river, and a species of snow mongoose that is absolutely adorable.  Thereīs no known economic use for the mongoose.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our troops awaited the summer thaw before attacking the final stronghold of the Yangjun, knowing their defenses constructed of ice-blocks would melt in the sun.  After several bloody battles, our troops crushed the enemy resistance and raised our flag over the savagesī loathsome capital city.  The rightful occupation of Yangjun was completed at last!

The veterans (our entire army):

Some contemporary foreign relations:

A glimpse into the Uristian economy:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At this time, Uristriaīs economy and labor force is growing steadily, but we are lamentably falling behind a couple of other Major nations industrially (and even militarily).  At the time of this image, our growth was critically limited by our undersized internal transportation network, the expansion of which in turn is limited by our import deficiency on iron.  Until the port is built on the river Morul and opens up our iron deposits, we depend entirely upon Penia for a token iron ore supply.

We have expanded the gold mines, which are now producing double in precious gold bullion.  Our miners are hard at work expanding our other mines, such as the coal mine, which is now online producing all the coal we currently need.  As you can see, weīre not able to transport all of our resources until the rail system expands.  Iīve devoted all of our steel production towards this for the present.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The first Council of Governors was held in 1825.  We are about third-ranked in the world currently and were not nominated for the honor, unfortunately.

New technology that could enhance our textile production:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And more in the news...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lastly, a birds-eye overview of Uristia, image taken 1826.  Great news - we now have a port accessing our iron deposits!  We shall be hauling out 4 ore every season from the expanded mine.  Suffice it to say, we now are self-sufficient in coal (ample supplies) and iron (just barely).  Our peopleīs engineer is posted in Pusan, developing a river port for the export of timber and cotton.  In the south, our foresters are developing the timber supply along the Tholtig river.  Things are really coming together economically.  We dispatched our first foreign grants of $1,000 each to Penia and Yubah (one-time only- our finances are not consistent enough yet to promise sustained aid packages).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Plans on the drawing board:
  • Expand the rail network towards the southern Uristians.  We could benefit from accessing the horses that roam the arid south.
  • The Admiraltyīs request for additional frigates will be fulfilled as soon as possible.

Well, this is good news. We should probably take a short break from military conquests and build up our economy and navy before resuming them. There are plenty of unexploited resources left in our country. Perhaps train a few more regiments for the army, including cavalry once you get some horses. Make sure to have enough canned food.

Where should we be looking towards in regards to expansion, anyway? We're looking for resources, of course, that's always the goal. We need more ore and possibly wood as well, it seems, so invade a nearby minor country with lots of hills, mountains and forests!
