Letīs play Imperialism! Hail Uristia - We have colonies.
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:18:05 pm »

For those that arenīt familiar, Imperialism is the noble forebear to Paradoxīs Vicky series, at least in spirit.  Although not at all as scroll-and-slider intensive as Vicky, the depth of this game is marvelous for a 35MB title from 1997, and frankly, the delightfully well-adjusted level of complexity generally keeps you playing way too long in one sitting.  Thereīs a vigorously dedicated little sect of admirers for this game.

What I really adore is the randomly-generated worlds created by the game engine.  All names of countries and cities are random gibberish that usually are phonetically pronunciable, and feature quasi-cultural accents that identify them as representing nations that are Hispanic, European, Oriental, Middle Eastern, etc in spirit.

Iīm not very good at this game, but itīs very absorbing.  Iīve only played a couple of times before and always driven my countries into the ground, but I have learned a great deal from those failed states.

Bear with me, or overthrow me in an RP coup and seize power for yourselves!  Supposing the tiny save file can successfully be passed between us, itīs possible we could have a change of government (or political parties, what have you) every ten years or so, and watch each other screw everything up.  If you like this idea, please say as much.

I donīt know how this will work out as an LP, but letīs give it a shot.

Letīs play Imperialism

Letīs forge a glorious industrializing nation in a magnificently randomly-generated world!  Whoīs with me?
Feel free to join in with an RP spirit, a scrutinizing eye, a heckling attitude, or whatever it is you enjoy about contributing to an LP.
Iīm happy to write anyone into our cultural lore as whatever they wish to be - be a merchantman captain, prime arch-chancellor of the exchequery, marshal of our armed forces, a peopleīs engineer, whatever.  This game is a blank canvas for creativity - letīs make this rich and complicated.  Letīs bicker while the enemy pounds at our gates.
  • First things first, we need a name for our incipient nation.  I was thinking something all of us here at B12 could rally around - how about Uristia?  Iīm wide open to suggestions.
  • I could select a country with a balanced slew of biological resources, or we could gamble on a mountainous region that may pay off later with rich veins of ore (not really a good idea, but it could make things interesting)!
Weigh in with your opinion, future countrymen.  Iīm going to have a Scotch while I wait, here at my fine pixelated mahogany desk.

Ah, Uristia! Land of a million mountains and not a drop of water! We must colonize to bring water back to the homeland!

Hurrah!  We find ourselves at the dawn of a new age.  It is the summer of 1815, and the possibilities are daunting.  Conceivably, weīve just overthrown our long-standing monarchy, and through the cogent guidance of our revolutionary government (our fine selves), we shall lead Uristia out of the darkness of our ignorance and serfdom, and into the modern world!

First, a map of the world.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is our region.  We have only one continental neighbor, the (clearly Oriental) Minor Nation of Yangjun.  Much of their territory is barren tundra.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ah, beautiful Uristia!  I gaze upon her with bated breath.
We have two domestic mountain ranges, one small and one large, as you can surely see gentlemen.  Full of precious ore, surely.  What shall we name them?
Also, we have a unique natural blessing - two mighty navigable rivers reaching deep into our interior.  What shall they be called?
Iīve dispatched our Prospector to the hills west of Uristia City to find ore.  Our engineer is stationed in the arid south, along a major river, where we would benefit from establishing a port to bring us these Southern resources.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We also have rich resources of timber, and plentiful arable land to feed us.  Our shortcoming will clearly be textiles.  Only one flock of sheep exists to the north of Uristia city, supplying us with wool.  Far to the south in dusty Omie province there exists only a little land suitable for cotton cultivation.  Clearly we will need depend on trade to obtain our textiles for the foreseeable future.

Our military is composed of militia regiments drawn up in the provincial capitals of our country.  Uristia city is our military HQ.  The current roster of enlisted regulars:

Not much to speak of.

Our internal economy is summed up on this ledger.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is the trade board, displaying the current tradeable commodities in our world.  Currently we are buying and selling nothing.  You can see how much of certain resources we have in our warehouses.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The resources are, from top to bottom: clothing, furniture, tools, armaments, canned food, textiles, lumber, paper, steel, cotton, wool, timber, coal, iron ore, and horses.
Clothing and furniture sound petty, but they are the consumer goods that allow us to raise laborers from the masses.  Tools are a great export for building relations with foreign countries and building up reserves of cash.  Canned food is a fallback for our people when fresh foods are not available.  Currently, weīre digging into our supply since our harvests of raw foods are not great enough to feed everyone.  Uristia City is built around forests, mostly.
Paper is the resource that allows us to educate our Omegas and turn them into Betas and Alphas.  Skilled workers lend much more power to the workforce than unskilled.
Coal and iron ore together give us steel, but I donīt need to tell you guys that... ::)

This is our industrial outlay - Uristia city, basically.  Iīve taken a few actions to get us started - educating some workers, building two new trading ships to enlarge the merchant marine, building railroad capacity, and breaking ground on a lumber mill, furniture factory, and textile mill.
Iīve used some of our cash to train a civilian brigade of mining engineers, who will be ready to extract ores (read: GOLDGOLDGOLD!!) next season.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just thinking, according to this paper, we should appoint three government ministers.  We need an Interior Minister, a Foreign Affairs minister, and a Defense minister.  Any takers?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lastly, Iīve established two trade consulates in the minor nations of Yubah and Peniah.  We would do well to make friends with them, since they have a great deal of cotton to sell.
The five-year plan:
  • Establish mines as soon as possible.
  • Build port in Southern region to tap the resources there.
  • Sell surplus lumber in exchange for textiles.

We must name the beautiful geographic features of Uristia! I propose to name them the Ironblood Mountains and the Tholtig and Morul rivers!

This proposal has my full support. Unite the island!

Besides, we all know what riches might eventually be found beneath frozen ground. And if it isn't, we'll at least have the entire coast under our control; much smaller risk in another of the great powers getting a foothold on our soil that way.

1817
(This is our noble flag, by the way.)

Iīm thrilled to see such unity amongst the Uristrians, already.  Iīve heeded the demands of the militant population, and diverted our limited resources into preparing an invasion of the north.  Julius Clonkus has some valid points about the strategic value of such an operation.

Our new port was completed along the Tholtig River after nine months of work.  Illustrated is the boon to our economy provided by this infrastructural achievement:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We have obtained a meager supply of cotton, and more grain and timber.  We now have enough incoming food supply to feed our population.

In 1816, we discovered our first reserves of iron ore!  Bad news: the remote, rugged location of the deposit makes it inaccessible to our economy until our engineers learn how to build railroads into the hills.  That could be a few years...  We still will depend on imports for now.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our merchant marine has been hard at work ferrying goods to and fro across the seas.

I compiled an overview of our typical import/export flow to give you guys an idea what our economy has been eating for the past two years.  The purchases of ores and steel were paid for by selling our furniture (made from our ample timber) which is a hot item on the market right now.  Clearly our culture boasts the cutting-edge of interior design.
The steel was diverted directly into arms production.  Hurrah!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The trades with iron-rich Penia are beneficial since we have a trade consulate there, and each trade bolsters our relationship.

This fall, we discovered GOLD! in the Ironblood mountains!  We should be able to extract it once a port is built on that little bay there, and our miners can construct a mine.  ETA: nine months-one year.

Some illustrative graphs compiled by our bespectacled interns down in the basement of the Parliament building:

Our military in the fall of 1817.  Itīs actually the largest professional army in the world, currently.  Bear in mind the militia are static infantry, and cannot be sent abroad with the army, leaving us with just this handful of trained troops.  Should we commence war with the Yungjan savages or add a few more regiments?  And whoīs going to lead these green troops to glory in the frigid north?  Any volunteers from the Parliament (cough cough  ::))?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: NRDL shall assume the generalship.  He shall be compensated in vast tracts of Yungjan land when we are victorious.

[Sneering Imperialist] I could care less who leads our glorious army, it's not like the savages will actually be able to mount a meaningful defense against our forces. You could give command to anyone and win!

[Equalist] No! War is a unneeded venture! I vote we instead rule the world thru the powers of trade and diplomacy, convert the world to ours!

May I be Imperism'd as the Foreign Affairs minister?

I dont think you should wage war so early, do you know how it will affect world-opinion? You may cause the world to cut-off imports to Uristia.
