Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Obsidian 23, 350

I like to think I'm an organized sort of dwarf. I like lists and plans and orderly things. I imagine this is why I was chosen over the others to be the bookkeeper of New Murderfarmed. And now, it seems, I've also been chosen as a replacement for Helmet as overseer of this settlement for the following year.

I also liked to think I was a good judge of character. Helmet certainly seemed like a reasonable dwarf back in the Mountainhomes. He was able to draw us together, convince us and organize our departure in secret, wasn't he? Hah. He's proven me wrong quite spectacularly over the past season... Raving about how Broseph Stalin was a god and he himself was his prophet, bending our resources towards a ridiculous temple instead of practical things. I've peeked at the bundle of scraps he calls his "Holy Tome" and it's certainly nothing of the sort. It's merely the notes and plans of an ambitious and competant dwarf, not unlike myself. Sadly, it seems all this open sky has unhinged poor Helmet's mind. The sooner I can take over the better it'll be for everyone.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Obsidian 28, 350

I've drawn up a list of priorities that I'll be following for the next year. I can't imagine any reasonable dwarf would disagree with it.

The most important things are:
1. Socks
2. A good drink
3. Staying alive
4. Everything else

Because some fantastically foreward-thinking and responsible individual (me) made sure we were all equipped with brand new high-quality socks before leaving the Mountainhomes, the first priority is already taken care of for now. That said, getting a clothing industry underway will certainly be high on the list of changes I'll be making around here, starting tomorrow.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Granite 1, 351

Helmet gave a rousing if slightly cringe-worthy speech last night and officially passed the buck on to me. At first light this morning, I set about with the first order of business, which was of course a complete inventory of our current situation. So far, it's becoming obvious how damaging Helmet's psychosis may have been if he had continued as overseer.

As bookkeeper, I've been keeping stock and had written down that we have 100 units of alcohol available. However, on my walkaround this morning I noticed Wolfwood and Sacha trying to drink  from the well under the tavern. When I asked why, they explained that Helmet had placed every single barrel of alcohol in the basement of his insane temple and forbidden anyone from touching it. What kind of insanity is this?! We may be living aboveground, but we're still dwarves! I told them to stop kneeling in the dirt and go get a real drink like a civilized person.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And why were they kneeling in the dirt to begin with? It turns out our community "well" is actually nothing more than a water-filled hole in the ground.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've obviously got a lot of work to do.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Granite 2, 351

I finished up my inventory today. We're all set for food, with plenty of fish, meat, and plants. We're running low on wood, so I've sent all available woodcutters to work on the forest across the river.
As for our current town layout, I've included a labelled map on the next page.

We have 19 dwarves and only 3 houses, one of which is the monstrosity that Helmet built for himself. Stardust's and Helmet's houses are made out of raw fireclay, which is quick to build but probably intended to be temporary (though with Helmet, who knows). Considering our near-unlimited access to clay and wood, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't take advantage of it and build houses of sturdy brick. Perhaps we can even acquire the means to make glass windows. Hmm.

Our farms are expansive but our sole planter, Infinity Weapon, is running herself ragged trying to keep it planted all by herself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Despite her protests, I've told Dariush to give her a hand with it for now. This'll give Infinity Weapon more time to brew drinks on the side, at least.

I've also taken note of the fact that we have several barrels filled with raw animal fat. Why? Who knows. It's gross. I've instructed Uristeamer to take a break from killing things and render the glop into a more shelf-stable form before it goes rancid. Maybe we can foist it on some traders later and they can find a use for it.

With all that out of the way, tomorrow I can start the planning phases of making sure priorities one through three are all looked after. If New Murderfarmed is going to be a success, it looks like it's going to be up to me to singlehandedly drag it out of the dirt.

Also, I'm a graphic user, and I hope to play this in graphic, but I guess I'll clean up after I'm done.

Great update DeKaFu it looks like you've got a clear direction for the fortress and a clear personality for your dwarf. Also, not sure if I was clear but if you lock the first floor hatch in the temple it becomes inaccessible to building destroyers.

Granite the first, The Fifteenth Year of Our Lord Broseph Stalin's Dominion over Heaven and Earth (350)

Dammit to hell! Flamey has unsealed the emergency rations in the temple! Now the dwarves are all drinking and eating the emergency supplies, what the hell's going to happen if we get attacked and have to hide in the temple? We'll be trapped like rats without food or water because we ate the emergency rations! Still after consulting the tomes I've determined that if we make poor decisions with the stockpiles Broseph Stalin will express his displeasure by sending bears. I am vigilant for bears but for the moment it seems her transgressions have not offended our lord.

BONES. Powdery, unpleasant Bones! I was once a proud worker of wax but nooooo. Wax is not the bones of bees! They have hard skin and no need of bones! Just crush one and see!

See!? No Bones! Gah! The powder! The bone powder! It's everywhere! On my hands in my clothes IN MY EYES!

{The rest of the page is illegible scribblings with crude pictures of bees and bones scattered around.}

(It isn’t exactly the fall of murder farmed, but sometimes a Story has a way of changing while you write it. I think it still contributes to the narrative however.)
The Dwarven after-life in the home of Zasit is nearly indistinguishable from regular Dwarven living, save for the fact that it works perfectly. Or rather it did work perfectly, but now the entire structure of the Greatest Mountain-Home was starting to show Signs of age and neglect, cracks in the walls of worked adamantine barely the width of a hair stood out like gaping holes through which evil and chaos could leak into these halls of perfect order.  It was because of these tiny yet glaring cracks that momuz was prostrating himself before his chosen god, begging forgiveness for his failure.
The sobbing vampire knelt with his nose to the glittering floor, and tried again to explain what had happened to the recently failed fortress of murder-farmed.
“There were just too many to fight lord Zasit! With all of those that we lost to the freezing river and dehydration, we simply did not have enough soldiers to stop-“
“Enough.” Sighed the manifestation of Zasit, a regal dwarf clothed in robes made from the silk of demon’s with a beard of pure adamantine. “Momuz, faithful Momuz, you blame yourself the failure of the abomination of murder farmed, but the fault lies not with you. Murder farmed was doomed from the beginning, not even the greatest Overseer’s of history could have saved it.” Zasit slowly walked down to the still Shaking form of momuz.
“And do you know why it was doomed to fail?” Zasit whispered into the vampire’s ear.
   “W-why?”
“Because, dwarves are not meant to live as elves or humans. They are meant to live as dwarves, persevering underground in the face of any and all adversity. Even the loss of metal. Now do you see why the settlement was doomed to failure, my ardent follower?”
“Y-yes lord Zasit. There was nothing I could have done.”
“Exactly. Now, there is one thing that you must do, before you can join your fellow true dwarves in this paradise.”
   “Anything Lord Zasit.”
“The fools have founded another settlement, a second murder farmed. I need you to go there and ensure its destruction.”
   “Of course my lord.”
“There is just one thing that you must remember. Murder farmed must not fall to an outside threat. No goblin ambush or rampaging titan. It must fall from famine and disease, so that all dwarves will see that they are not meant to live above the ground. Do you understand, Momuz?”
“Yes. Murder farmed will survive any outside attack, only to fall to its own incompetence.”
“Then I send you back to the world. You will be but a child when you arrive, but you will be more than capable of bringing down murder farmed. The will of all true dwarves is with you momuz!”

I get the feeling that the dwarvern gods are waiting until Momez is sent back to laugh to just sit back and laugh "Ha! I can't believe he fell for that!"    "Yeah HAhahaha! We watch over an endless variety of worlds. Why are the sentient races so anamored to the thought that we take personal value to their life?"   Suddenly the laughter stops "But... doesn't us doing that joke on Momuz make us take personal interest in his life and murderfarmed?" the gods are silent as they ponder this "I don't know... Let's watch... May as well."

At 9:00 I begin the countdown to Breaking Bad, for the two hours following I am not to be disturbed unless I am personally on fire. Consequently that is when the poll is locked.

Remove all mods (cept above ground farming) we'll start our tinkering from scratch.

I seem to have been missed on the Dwarfing list. I'd like to be a woodcutter/butcher. One axe to chop them all into little pieces.

Ugh.... Alright then I guess. Do we have to make ABSOLUTELY sure that it works before adding it? Because these stories about lava-cheese have made me wary.

Actually from now on we'll let the overseer choose what they add and if they add it (assuming the group doesn't veto) if you don't want to add anything don't.

Well okay. I just thought of something. Since it appears most dwarves are unaware of the glory of bacon and the other "human common sense" modding we're doing it would give some RP reasons for things working and not working. Sort of like screwing around with that which was not meant to be known by dwarves.

Yeah but things were REALLY not working. Many varieties of cheese were replaced with frozen milk which formed puddles when traders came and there are vats of unidentifiable fluid.

I smell a inquisition brewing!  :o

I know! Dworf and sign me up as the Sheriff/Captain of the guard. Make it a costum title "Inquisitor".

As for what industry. Dunno. Maybe that dwarf that is currently working with clay? Encrusting stuff with fireclay (read, smearing it)? Is he free to be taken and fit for the role as holy inquisitor of Broseph Stalin? If not I can take whatever else, clothier maybe? Beekeper works too. Oh, and I hope I am not getting in the way of others rp?

Anyway, I would like to be signed up for a turn as overseer too, if possible...

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Granite 6, 351

Today I noticed Uristeamer loafing around the tavern, pointedly not rendering any glop. When I politely enquired as to what the hell was holding him up, he informed me that we lacked the proper glop-rendering facilities. I suppose I'll have to order a kitchen installed near the butchery for this purpose.

Predictably, I suppose, Helmet made a huge ruckus when I reopened access to the food and drink in the temple. "Those were supposed to be emergancy supplies!", apparently. I had to patiently explain that emergancy rations aren't much good if we're all dead from thirst before the emergancy arrives because we couldn't touch them. Besides, I'd already arranged to keep the temple basement as our primary food and drink storage area, so as long as we have any supplies at all, they'll be there.
To this he stomped off while muttering about divine retribution. I'm going to have to keep an eye on him.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Granite 16, 351

Kekath's leafy beard! Do you know what I discovered today?! Infinity Weapon has been brewing all the rope reed she's grown into river spirits! So many potential socks down the drain in the form of subpar alcohol. She gave me an odd look when I reprimanded her, but at least that nonsense is stopped now.

I've been putting some thought into how best to get some clothing production underway. Apart from the rope reed, we have two sheep and a lamb which can be sheared for that most fantastic of materials, wool. Perhaps building myself a small house near the farms with the means to process wool and plants would be a good start. I've already ordered some wood to be converted to charcoal for the production of bricks.

While I myself have some considerable skill in weaving and clothesmaking, I'll have to find a volunteer to help me keep the sheep sheared. I'll put out the call tonight and see if anyone is interested.

As a final note, the "houses" built under Helmet's oversight are little more than meager huts (with the exception of his own, of course). I ordered wooden doors installed on them today so they no longer have the appearance of impromptu mud shelters. New Murderfarmed just got a little more civilized.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Granite 23, 351

A dwarf who'd only been introduced to me before as "Uristeamer's wife" came up to me today and said her name was "Triaxx". She was holding an axe. I seem to recall seeing her gleefully hacking away at trees with the other Woodcutters. She looked pretty gleeful now, and said she was interested in helping me cut the sheep's wool. I was glad someone finally volunteered and told her to go ahead. But now that I think back... I.. hope she doesn't intend to use an axe.

Stardust threw a party in the temple today.

Inasmuch as a single dwarf jumping on the table while belting out songs is a party, anyway. Everyone else wisely kept their distance for the duration.

We're sorely in need of more housing, and since I'm working on a house for myself it's only fair that I attend to the situation in a general sense. We don't have the means to build houses for everyone all at once, so I've come up with a solution: Everyone's names will be put into a bucket and the first three that are drawn will be the next to have homes built. The drawing will be held on the 10th. This is the most fair method I could come up with.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Slate 10, 351

Well, the lottery is done. Two of the winners were couples, which means five dwarves will be getting a roof over their heads before long.
Broken and Argonnek will be getting a home by the river to the east,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dariush and Sacha will share a waterfront house beside Fishybang's dwelling,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and Infinity Weapon will gain a small house near the fields.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All made of wood, for now. There's some minor grumbling from the ones who didn't win, but everyone seems generally content to accept the results.

Now that the production of clothing is in its early stages and the alcohol stockpiles are piled high with stocks, it might be time to start thinking about some ways to improve our chances of staying alive...
