That wasn't quite what I meant,  more along the lines of a shed to keep the weather off than a food stockpile.

Besides he never said he was sane. Besides, who isn't crazy around here.

Elves!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Elven merchants, to be precise. They arrived with their pack animals this morning. Their faces were looking a shade greener than usual when they saw all our lovely wooden architecture. Hah! It warms my heart.

Do you know what this means? It means New Murderfarmed is being recognized as far as the Greater Forests! It just goes to show, those migrants were fools not to join us.

I've put together a list of supplies that we're in need of and passed it on to our broker:

10x Barrels of Assorted Alcohol
1x Alpaca, Female
1x Alpaca, Male
1x Bag of Sand
3x Assorted Dyes
3x Battle Axes, Metal

Of course, these being elves, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bring anything besides a dozen bins of cloth. Cloth... It's tempting, but I'll be darned if the first socks of New Murderfarmed are going to be of an elven weave. We'll make our own cloth, thank you very much. And by we, I of course mean me.

As for our end of things, Argonnek has been doing a wonderful job of carving bits of animals into trinkets, despite her near-constant grumbling. We have nearly 100 assorted odds and ends lying about. She showed me a pair of earrings she'd carved out of a wild boar's hoof, and they were absolutely breathtaking. For someone who hates her job, she's certainly good at it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I told her that if she keeps up the good work, perhaps we could arrange to have a pair of beehives installed behind her house before the end of the year. She was so pleased by that idea that she produced this this very afternoon:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...She says the flask is full of honey. We don't actually have the means to process any honey yet. I hope I haven't made a promise I can't keep.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Felsite 23, 351

Our broker finished the trading today. Here's my list as he handed it back to me:

10x Barrels of Assorted Alcohol   only had 5
1x Alpaca, Female din't have any
1x Alpaca, Male  din't have any
1x Bag of Sand  got it
3x Assorted Dyes din't have any
3x Battle Axes, Metal  they got mad when i askt

....Right. Guess I shouldn't be surprised... At least we got the sand. I've got something in store for that.

Thieves! Kobolds in the stockpiles!

Dariush startled the first while walking past the main stockpile. Luckily it hadn't had a chance to actually grab anything. It shot out of the stockpiles and ran for the hills like a grimy little bolt of lightning as soon as he shouted.
The second one turned up later this evening, once again spotted by Dariush. He says it ran at him while waving its dagger and shouting nonsense. When he jumped out of the way, it kept running and disappeared into the bushes. Again, it hadn't managed to take anything.

I'm glad no-one was hurt, but...How unsettling. I think I'll have to finish my plans for improving security.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Felsite 28, 351

It's the end of spring.
New Murderfarmed has seen a lot of growth in terms of construction, but our population remains small. The houses are finished except for the rooves, and we're in the process of replacing Stardust's clay walls with proper wood.

I've prepared a document outlining my plans to make New Murderfarmed slightly more secure. It'll likely be a season at least before we can get it underway, but I think the fact that we have a plan will improve morale after recent events.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ideally, we'll be able to find some volunteers with a bit of crossbow training to do the patrolling. I'll present the idea tomorrow and see if it meets the general approval of the town.

I think maybe one would be okay. But have it be a "windmill" where they just hang out? I'd wait for Broseph to answer that one.

Diary of Argonnek.
Flamey has made promises of bees near my house. Now every night I dream of their wonderful buzzing. Though I lack experience in raising them, so I may ask that one more experienced than I manage the hives and their wonderful bees and honey and buzzing and wax and mead and jelly and... [this continues for some time.]

WAX! The wax will not have powder, will not cling to every surface it touches in spite of attempts to clean. No, when wax sticks, it can be removed or reused. Crafted. I made earrings from a hoof and Flamey stood in awe. I must show him what a proper material looks like when masterful. Yes.

Journal of Betelgeuse

[the date is illegible]

Today is my last day in the mountainhomes. Tomorrow I will set out for the settlement of Murderfarmed. The continuing lack of metal has put people on edge. It has made them paranoid and afraid. And now the priests are using that to their advantage and expanding their control over the people. They have painted magic users like myself as dark sorcerers, and some have even gone so far as too suggest that our "evil" has angered the gods and brought this curse upon us. I do not wish to leave, but it seems I have no choice. It won't be long before the pogroms and witch-burnings start. I will try to convince some of the other warlocks to come with me, but I fear they will not listen. None of them want to believe that these horrors are coming. But I know. And so I flee.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Hematite 1, 351

Excellent. It seems unbelievable, but everyone actually agreed unanimously that my Watchtower plan is a good idea and that we should move ahead with it. This may be the first time in the history of New Murderfarmed that everyone's agreed on anything!

Indeed, some seemed downright excited about it. I'd been worried about finding anyone to actually patrol the towers, but before the end of the meeting, both Wolfwood and Pon Katt had actually come up to me and volunteered!

The popularity of the plan has taken me a bit off guard... There's usually some disagreement whenever I propose something. I guess the thieves unsettled everyone else as much as they did me. We'll have to get the first stages underway after the houses are complete.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Hematite 15, 351

The summer has been quiet so far. The biggest news is that, at long last, the three new houses are finished!

Infinity Weapon was the first to move in...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But the two couples were able to follow shortly after.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've ordered wooden chests and cabinets to be made for all the houses. Things are started to look very homey and civilized.

In more exciting news, I was speaking to Uristeamer today and discovered that apart from being a master hunter, oddly enough, he has a bit of experience with spinning wool! I asked and he's agreed to take a look at the wool that Triaxx has been hacking off the sheep. Soon, I'll be able to finally make our first piece of cloth. Soon...

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Hematite 25, 351

The first floor of my house has been finished and furnished. Finally, the acting overseer has somewhere to sleep!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also had some wooden fenceposts driven into the ground to make a pasture behind my house for the wool-bearers so I can keep an eye on them. They are, after all, our most important livestock.

Construction of the watchtowers has yet to begin, as Wolfwood and Pon Katt never hesitate to remind me. They ambushed me outside the tavern last week to berate me on how they still weren't "officially" protecting the town yet because I hadn't "officially" announced their positions.

So, in order to keep them happy, I held an Official ceremony last night to designate those two as our Official militia. Wolfwood is now our Official Militia Commander, while Pon Katt is our Official Militia Second-in-Command.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As part of the ceremony, I Officially handed them some crossbows and bolts, and ordered Stardust to create some Official leather uniforms so they can appear properly Official.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They're calling themselves The Inky Quakes, for reasons known only to them. I hope this was sufficiently official to meet their expectations.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Malachite 3, 351

I've been taking a break from inventory to walk the parimeter with Pon Katt and mark the places where the watchtowers will be built. It looks like there will be seven or eight in total.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...While we were out this morning, we spotted what looked like another recently abandoned campsite in the distance. We investigated, and it appears like it was definitely Dwarven. It looks like it may have happened again...

I made Pon Katt promise not to tell anyone what we'd found, and together we hid the remains of the campsite. Morale is higher now than it's been since we started - there's no point getting everyone depressed. New Murderfarmed is growing more impressive with each day... I'm sure next time...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Malachite 13, 351

Hah! Even without migrants, our population is growing!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Triaxx and Uristeamer are the proud parents this time. They've named her Kivish Patternedlash.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She is, in fact, a rather ugly baby, not to mention uncannily hairless. I didn't tell the parents that. Regardless, she's the newest proud citizen of New Murderfarmed. Uristeamer and Triaxx will have the next house that is built, so that the young one can be safe with a roof over her head.

Speaking of houses, though, in the process of starting work on the Watchtowers we've unexpectedly hit a shortage of wood. Further construction will have to be halted for a while until we can build our stockpiles up again.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Malachite 28, 351

I... I'm not quite sure how to write this down. Helmet has been injured. I don't know how gravely, because nobody in this town has any knowledge of medicine or first aid.

According to Triaxx, who witnessed it, Helmet was on his way to help with the woodcutting effort when a lone wild boar appeared and suddenly charged him. Apparently instead of running like a sensible person, he tried to stand his ground and was unsurprisingly knocked to the ground and trampled.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When he tried to fight back, the boar jumped into a nearby pond and then fled before any of the hunters or militia could react. Nobody seems to know where it went after that.

Someone carried Helmet back to the second floor of the Tavern, where he's currently resting. He's not outwardly bleeding, but his ribs are heavily bruised.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can only hope he'll be alright without medical intervention... He may be crazy, but our frequent disagreements are well known to everyone, so it'd look bad if anything were to happen to him under my watch.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Galena 10, 351

Today is a landmark occasion!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Crafted by my own two hands, the first piece of cloth produced by New Murderfarmed! It's still missing something... a splash of colour... something bright and bold... but then... then...

...To celebrate the occasion, I'm having a basement dug beneath my house, which will serve as storage for all the marvelous thread and cloth we'll doubtless be producing from now on.

In other, less exciting news, the foundation has been layed for a new bridge in the west, creatively dubbed The Western Bridge. It'll be made from wood and brick, and should be sturdy enough to last years once it's complete.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Galena 13, 351

More merchants have appeared. This time it's humans!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Unlike the elves, they've brought several wagons weighed down heavily with goods. So much confidence in our wares! I've ordered the finest of Argonnek's bonecrafts brought to the trade depot in preparation of their arrival, and have set about making some more woollen cloth to show them what we're capable of. This is a perfect opportunity to spread word of our continued success and independence to the world!

I've produced a revised version of my required item list from last time to give to the broker. Here it is:

10x Barrels of Assorted Alcohol
15x Wooden Logs
1x Alpaca, Female
1x Alpaca, Male
1x Dog, Male
1x Dog, Female
3x Assorted Dyes
1x Bag of Hideroot Seeds
1x Bag of Blade Weed Seeds
1x Bag of Rope Reed Seeds
2x Battle Axes, Metal
2x Helmets, Metal
40x Crossbow Bolts, Metal

I'm much more confident about getting everything on the list this time. How exciting!

While surveying the town in preparation of their arrival, it has occured to me that our roads are a complete mess, with weeds and grass threatening to hide them completely. Ideally we will one day have beautiful clean roads of brick or stone, but for now I've told everyone to pull out the weeds and make our dirt roads look a little more proper.

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Galena 25, 351

The broker has finished with the trading. Here's what he showed me:

10x Barrels of Assorted Alcohol   only had 7
15x Wooden Logs   din't have any
1x Alpaca, Female   din't have any
1x Alpaca, Male      din't have any
1x Dog, Male       din't have any
1x Dog, Female      din't have any
3x Assorted Dyes    got 2 red + 1 green
1x Bag of Hideroot Seeds      din't have any
1x Bag of Blade Weed Seeds     din't have any
1x Bag of Rope Reed Seeds    din't have any
2x Battle Axes, Metal    got 1 copper + 1 iron
2x Helmets, Metal   there's were to big
40x Crossbow Bolts, Metal    they were to fansy + cost to much

...Not as successful as I'd hoped, but at least we got our hands on some dye and battle axes. From the sounds of it, they'll also be leaving with some of Argonnek's finest boar-hoof pieces some of my precious cloth. It hurts to see it go, but... improving our reputation is important right now.

In other news, my second-floor study is very nearly complete. Only one thing remains, and I might as well handle it myself...

Journal of Flamey Paperlines, Galena 28, 351

The trees are starting to turn bright colours... Summer has come to an end. Much has been accomplished in the past few months. All the new homes are finished and furnished, and the basic structures for eight watchtowers are in place. We have plenty of food and drink, and are being protected by a small but enthusiastic militia. The construction of the new bridge is well underway, and it should be completed soon. The humans have left carrying word and physical proof of our skill as craftsmen.

The only mishap we've had is Helmet's injury, and to be honest I'm happy to have him out of my hair for a while. He's still resting in the Tavern, but seems to be stable and slowly improving. I wouldn't be surprised if he's underfoot again within a month or two.

All in all, I'd say New Murderfarmed has never been in a better state of affairs than it is right now. The future looks bright. What could possibly go wrong now?

The date upon which Flamey has plotted my murder.

Flamey is an elf conspirator! Why would elves come to a settlement made entirely out of wood I asked myself, why would they be here in Murderfarmed? Because they have been summoned, this is the only logical answer. Flamey conspired with the elves to contract a boar assassin. My unparalleled skill in warfare combined with the blessing of our Lord Broseph Stalin allowed me to defend myself adequately. The assassin dove into the water and fled before I could strike a killing blow. In an effort to murder me further Flamey has had me detained in the tavern despite the fact that my own home is larger, more private, and cleaner. I recall this from the pages of the tome of Broseph Stalin. In his last days the Miner Winter laid in a hospital bed, wounded by Nerjin. When Winter did not perish Nerjin used his weakened state to murder him in the tavern. Clearly Flamey has conspired with Sacha, she will come to visit me soon with the intent to kill me. I have concealed on my person several small stones and my trusty axe. I shall carve my bed into a crossbow using the small rocks and then when she enters the room I'll fire the axe into her heart killing her instantly! This plan cannot fail!

Humans. They bring wagons and trade. Flamey decides to send off my crafts. I do not weep to see them go. I have grown accustomed to the powder... For short times. It covers me, it covers my child, it covers my work my home my [violent scribbling obscures the following lines.]

No. I must not succumb to the madness again. I will work wax soon. Very soon.

Here it is! My chance to redeem myself! I literally ran to Flamey to ask him to let me treat Helmet! He's so similar to Broseph Stalin in ideology! I can finally redeem myself! He has to make me the medical dwarf... He just has to!
