Bronze-Age Goblins?
« on: May 20, 2012, 12:45:52 pm »

Is it the case that goblinite always contains iron?  Or at least, after repeated goblin attacks, you can expect at least a small amount of iron gear?

I haven't had a proper siege yet, so I may be prematurely concerned.  On my current map, neither the mountainhome nor raiding goblins have brought any iron, and my delving has turned up just galena and tetrahedrite (plus LOTS of emeralds, so I really shouldn't complain).  I set the world for a relatively short history, and I wonder if in his brilliance Toady requires that a civilization must last a certain number of years before it starts using iron.

Thanks for any feedback!  All praises to Armok, for His gift of emeralds.  I will sacrifice some peasants in His honor as soon as I get to 100 dorfs.

Iron can be gotten as trade items or goblinite even in year 1.  Sometimes none of the civs you are in contact with have found iron, however.  It sounds like thats what you have run into.

well, civs need to spread. If they don't find iron on one of their sites, you're more or less screwed. the shorter the history, the less chance they have to spread out a bit

Try importing steel. Or pig iron and flux.

For the most part, the iron from my gobbos comes from mail shirts and caps, otherwise mostly delicious copper and silver. Seems like they get lots of tetrahedrite too.

I swear, my last fort had the wealthiest goblins.  Silver everything.  Silver pikes, silver maces, silver short swords, silver bolts, it was unreal.  There were copper and iron items thrown in, but the amount of silver was just absurd.  If it wasn't for the native gold veins I'd embarked on, I would have been able to have all-silver furniture just by melting it all.  As is, I made literally thousands of silver bolts just from goblinite.

So no technological ages, but the short history may have contributed to my civilization not having acquired iron.  The caravans have had a tiny amount of steel and pig iron (how?!?) to sell, so that's something.

Thanks for clearing that up, and fast too!

They have the reactions for it, so they will have those even if they don't have the required parent materials.

Gotta love the steel made from AIR.
Iron extracted from blood, carbon extracted from air.
Skill.

No.  They have the reactions for it, so if they get access to any iron at all, they will make steel.  All entities perform any reactions they have the raw materials for, and will trade with each other to get those raw materials.  That's one of the reasons worldgen takes so long, all that stuff is tracked.

It's likely that only 1 or 2 sites they have contact with have iron at all, and most of it is being used for weapons, armor, and building purposes.  Only a trickle is going to get to you unless someone discovered the motherload.

Steel from air?  The Mountainhome of Catan can make it out of wool or bricks, I hear.

Jeoshua, I am awed to discover an even greater level of insane detail in worldgen.  Wow.  Maybe someday there'll be a proper economic simulation with market towns, trading cities, extractive camps, etc.

No, caddybear is correct. Civs will make any metal bars they have reactions for, even if they don't have the materials required to make them. I use this trick in my Corrosion mod to prevent all-steel caravans.
